Snow White

Snow White
First broadcast March 17, 2002 on ABC
Directed by Caroline Thompson
Starring Miranda Richardson, Tom Irwin, Vera Farmiga

This movie was originally scheduled for broadcast on an unspecified date in Fall 2001, then reverted to 'To Be Announced' status for several months before finally hitting the airwaves in March 2002.

And that's not all. It was originally advertised as a miniseries on the Hallmark Entertainment website, but the description was later modified to Movie of the Week. Ultimately, the film aired as a 2-hour TV movie.

Because of this apparent turmoil on the production end I was very concerned about how watchable the movie would be, but in the end it wasn't bad. It's possible that the early 'miniseries' description was an error; two hours was plenty of time to tell the story, and I can't imagine what they would have done with more time.

The movie took quite a few liberties with the traditional story line. I usually frown on that sort of thing, but in this case the presentation of the traditional elements was on the tedious side and the invented elements helped liven things up. A stronger performance from the heroine would have been REALLY helpful.

The seven dwarfs don't really start playing a major role in the movie until the second hour, and things become livelier at that point. The production took a fanciful approach toward these characters, but they still have humanity and dignity. Alas, Warwick only got the second-biggest role among the Seven, but his character had better lines than the guy who got the biggest part. It was fun to watch him do his thing! The movie would have been better if they'd expanded more on Snow White's relationship with the Seven, but still, they got a decent amount of screen time.

The official Snow White webpage is here on the RHI Entertainment website (formerly Hallmark).

This was Warwick's third appearance in a Halmi production; the first two were Gulliver's Travels and The Tenth Kingdom.
