Anakin Skywalker: No Wonder He Grows Up To Be Friendless!

There's a deleted scene in The Phantom Menace after the pod race where Anakin gets into a fight with a young Rodian who accuses him of cheating. The pictorial evidence (bottom of page) and the official novelization make it clear that Wald is just a bystander while all this is going on, and the script goes so far as to say that Anakin's antagonist is Greedo. But it's not for nothing that dear, sweet young Anakin ends up being the dark lord of the Sith. Just look at how he describes the incident in his diary [Page 41 and 42 of the Star Wars Episode 1 Journal: Anakin Skywalker]:

"Not everyone was happy with my win. Out of nowhere a Rodian named Wald appeared in front of me, blocking my path. Wald was usually a friend of mine. But one look at him and I knew he was no friend today.

Maybe he'd lost money on the race. Or maybe he just didn't like Humans. All I knew was that he wanted to fight because he said no Human could have won the Boonta Classic. Therefore, I must have cheated.

He got the fight he wanted.

But even as our fists flew, I wasn't thinking about him or the race. I was thinking about Padmé.

We were rolling on the ground, flailing at each other and kicking up dust when I felt a shadow loom over me.

Looking up, I saw Qui-Gon gazing down at me with a frown on his face. I quickly stood up and dusted myself off. The Jedi Knight asked what had happened. I told him how Wald had accused me of cheating.

He turned to Wald and asked him if he thought I'd cheated. To my surprise, even though I'd just pounded him halfway into a pulp, Wald nodded. He still thought I'd cheated!"

Some friend Anakin turned out to be, huh? He didn't even have anything to gain from twisting the story like this; after all, this is his private diary and no one else is supposed to look at it or know what's written there. Therefore, he must have defamed the character of his good buddy Wald just for fun. The dark side was calling even then...
