Deucalion
Release date: 2008?
Directed by Darren Martinez
Starring Warwick Davis, Hunter Gomez, Janet Miranda, Randy Shelly
Warwick will be the star of this independent film and will play the title character. The producers are trying to get Val Kilmer to appear in the film as well, and if they succeed we can all enjoy the onscreen reunion of two actors that we haven't seen together since Willow. The movie's official website is here but mostly contains teaser material at the moment.
According to a June 7, 2006 story on Young Star News, the story is a modern-day Elephant Man about a 'freak' who doesn't become the monster that the cruel world makes him out to be. 11-year-old Randy Shelly will play the role of Jude, a child who helps Deucalion after finding him lost in the forest during a camping trip with his parents. 14-year-old Hunter Gomez will play Alex, an orphan who grew up with Deucalion at a Catholic orphanage. The movie shows that although someone may appear to be a monster on the outside, often the real monsters are the everyday people who pass judgment on the so-called freaks.
This is the first feature film for writer/producer/director Darren Martinez, whose previous work was a documentary on post-Katrina New Orleans called Hellp.
Filming was expected to begin in October 2006 in northern New Mexico, until the funding fell through. But now they have a new investor as well as a new producer on board, and they expect to shoot in 2007. There's still no confirmation of Val Kilmer's participation in the movie. Strangely enough, I found some old references from Spring 2006 indicating that Alice Cooper was going to be in the movie, but since he's not currently being mentioned it seems likely that it fell through.
The name Deucalion comes from an ancient Greek legend that is remarkably similar to the story of Noah's Ark. Deucalion was the son of Prometheus, and was forewarned when an angry Zeus decided to destroy impious humanity with a massive flood. Deucalion and his wife built an ark to ride out the deluge (although they didn't bring along any animals) and afterward repopulated the earth. A later, less well known Deucalion was a king of Crete who was killed in the Trojan War. How do either of them fit the theme of this movie? Maybe they don't - in Dean Koontz's Frankenstein, Deucalion was the name given to the monster, and that looks like a more obvious reference for this film.
There are some video clips related to the movie on
YouTube. There's
sort of a trailer (apparently using temporary actors) and a couple of audition
tapes. Warwick doesn't appear at all, but the clips give you an idea of what the movie
will be like and a preview of a few scenes.
