Willow and Madmartigan are led to a dusty cellar, and discover that a number of men are already hiding there. Suddenly, one of them grabs Madmartigan's shoulder. AIRK: I knew you'd get out of that rat trap. Madmartigan grins, then slams Airk against the wall. MADMARTIGAN: You left me to die, Airk. AIRK: I probably saved your life. We were slaughtered and I lost a lot of good... GALLADOORN SOLDIER: Shhh, quiet! Up above, Sorsha kicks open the door of the hut and strides inside, looking around. The voice of Kael can be heard in the distance. KAEL: Tear this village apart! Look everywhere! Find the child! As Sorsha and her soldiers search the hut, they knock a table over with a loud crash. Elora starts wailing. While Willow frantically tries to quiet the baby, Raziel flies through the hut, cawing loudly to distract and mislead Sorsha. When Elora stops crying Raziel flies away, but Sorsha is still on the alert. Madmartigan watches her with interest through the spaces between the floorboards. Outside, the Nockmaar troops are terrorizing the villagers. KAEL: Tell Sorsha I search the north bank. NOCKMAAR SOLDIER: Yes, general. Kael rides away with several soldiers. Inside the hut, Sorsha kicks aside an animal-skin rug and discovers the trapdoor to the cellar. Madmartigan, Airk and the soldiers back away into the shadows beside the stairway. GALLADOORN SOLDIER: (to Willow, who's struggling to keep Elora quiet) Shhh, quiet! As Sorsha slowly descends the cellar steps, Airk gives Madmartigan a dagger. They wait tensely for Sorsha to come nearer. Sorsha cries out in surprise when Madmartigan grabs her wrist, jerks her off the steps, and puts the dagger to her throat. NOCKMAAR SOLDIER: (one of several coming down the steps) Sorsha! MADMARTIGAN: Back. Back! The soldiers do as he says. Madmartigan, still holding Sorsha, leads the way as the fugitives come out of the cellar. MADMARTIGAN: Back. AIRK: (to Willow) Keep the baby quiet. WILLOW: She needs to be changed. MADMARTIGAN: (looking out the window at the violence outside) Nockmaar scum. SORSHA: (struggling) You'll never defeat us. Give up the baby! MADMARTIGAN: Shut up! Willow settles down next to the fireplace to change the baby. AIRK: What does Bavmorda want with this baby anyway? WILLOW: She's a princess. We're taking her to Tir Asleen. AIRK: Tir Asleen? Even if you could find it, peck, she's right - you'd never get past the Nockmaar army. WILLOW: There's an even bigger army at Tir Asleen, if we can just get there. AIRK: (to Madmartigan) I've lost more than half my army fighting Bavmorda. Now you and this peck are gonna take her on? You always told me you served no one, Madmartigan. Since when are you a crusader? (to Willow) He's not gonna help you, peck. He's a worthless thief. MADMARTIGAN: I'm not a thief, Airk. WILLOW: (to Airk) He's not a thief. (to Madmartigan) Are you? There's a long pause as Madmartigan thinks about his answer. He stands up, dragging Sorsha with him. MADMARTIGAN: I serve the Nelwyn, Airk. Willow smiles. Airk looks stunned. MADMARTIGAN: Wanna come with us? AIRK: You'll never make it, Madmartigan. MADMARTIGAN: Then once again we say goodbye. Madmartigan forces Sorsha outside, followed by Willow with the baby. Madmartigan and Sorsha mount one of the horses tethered there; Willow takes another one. They are unnoticed until Sorsha calls out. SORSHA: Over here! NOCKMAAR SOLDIER: Sorsha! The soldiers start to advance on the heroes. MADMARTIGAN: Weapons down or she's dead. Reluctantly, they throw down their swords. WILLOW: (to his horse) Hyaah, hyaah! They ride out of the village. The Nockmaar soldiers immediately grab their swords. NOCKMAAR SOLDIER: Get to the horses, after them! But the pursuit is thwarted by Airk and his men, who come charging out of the hut and attack the Nockmaar minions. The villagers happily join in the fray, attacking the soldiers who had been terrorizing them only moments before. Raziel flies after Willow and Madmartigan. Airk watches them ride away. Some time later, the heroes have left the snowy heights and have arrived at the entrance to an arid canyon maze with guidance from Raziel. RAZIEL: This way! This way! As the crow flies, you fools! Madmartigan and Sorsha are still riding on the same horse, with Sorsha in front. SORSHA: You're holding me too tight! MADMARTIGAN: Well, I don't want you to get away. SORSHA: Why? Because I'm your sun, your moon, your starlit sky? MADMARTIGAN: Get your hair out of my face or I'll chop it off. (pause) Did I really... did I really say those things last night in your tent? SORSHA: You said you loved me. MADMARTIGAN: I don't remember that. SORSHA: You lied to me. MADMARTIGAN: No, I... I just wasn't myself last night. SORSHA: I suppose my power enchanted you and you were helpless against it. MADMARTIGAN: Sort of. SORSHA: Then what? MADMARTIGAN: It went away. SORSHA: Went away?! "I dwell in darkness without you," and it went away?! MADMARTIGAN: Yeah. Sorsha angrily elbows him in the belly and leaps off the horse. Madmartigan dismounts, runs after her, and tackles her, pinning her on the ground. WILLOW: (to his horse) Whoa. Madmartigan and Sorsha stare into each other's eyes. RAZIEL: Hurry! Kael's coming. War! Madmartigan pulls Sorsha to her feet and starts dragging her toward the horse. WILLOW: Madmartigan, come on! Now! Sorsha breaks free and runs away. Madmartigan starts to chase her. WILLOW: Madmartigan, come on! Madmartigan hesitates. RAZIEL: They're coming. Away! WILLOW: (to his horse) Go on, hyaah! Making up his mind, Madmartigan jumps on his horse. Sorsha stops running, and for a long moment their eyes meet. Then she turns and runs away, and Madmartigan sets out after Willow and Raziel. MADMARTIGAN: Haah! Further down the canyon, Kael and his troops pause to examine the trail. KAEL: (spurring his horse) This way! Later, Willow and Madmartigan's horses race across a grassy valley toward a magnificent castle. RAZIEL: Tir Asleen! At last, Tir Asleen! They enter the open gateway and bring their horses to a stop, looking around in shock. MADMARTIGAN: (shouting) Hello? Hello! Hello! Echoes are the only reply. The castle's inhabitants are frozen in blocks of crystal. MADMARTIGAN: Why did I listen to you, peck? (mockingly) "Everything'll be all right once we get to Tir Asleen." The only army around here is the one that's about to ride across this valley and wipe us out! WILLOW: But Cherlindrea said we'd be safe here! MADMARTIGAN: Safe?! Look at these people! This place is cursed, peck. It's falling apart. Open your eyes. And it... Madmartigan steps in something soft and squishy. He looks at the mess on his boot with distaste. MADMARTIGAN: Trolls. WILLOW: (horrified) I hate trolls! RAZIEL: This is the work of Bavmorda. Discouraged, Madmartigan wanders off. RAZIEL: Willow, the wand! Turn me back into my human form. WILLOW: Are you sure? Madmartigan cheers up when he finds the castle's armory. He laughs as he looks at the weapons, and twirls a sword. MADMARTIGAN: Good. His pleasure is increased by the discovery of a magnificent suit of armor. RAZIEL: Hurry, Willow. Transform me. WILLOW: I can't do it. I'm just not a sorcerer. RAZIEL: But you can be! Speak, and be one with the words. Willow aims the wand at Raziel. WILLOW: Avalorium... greenan... luatha... tye... RAZIEL: No, Willow, you're losing me! Willow is distracted by the sound of horses outside the castle. WILLOW: Madmartigan, Kael's coming! RAZIEL: Willow-w-w, you i-i-idiot! Raziel is now a goat. WILLOW: (as she runs away) Raziel?! Madmartigan strides out of the castle, dressed in the armor. MADMARTIGAN: Willow, arm that catapult up there! Madmartigan strains to close the castle gate, and drops the bar in place just before the Nockmaar army can enter. He laughs as their horses come to a stop. RAZIEL: Good work, Madma-a-artigan. MADMARTIGAN: What the hell happened to you? KAEL: (outside the gate) Assault! Sorsha, battering ram! Battle preparations begin. Madmartigan rolls a barrel onto a narrow causeway. Sorsha points at a tall tree. SORSHA: Cut it down! Willow arms a catapult as Madmartigan drags a net full of metal objects across the courtyard. Sorsha supervises the soldier chopping down the tree. SORSHA: Faster! The preparations proceed. Willow looks out of a high window in the wall just in time to see several Nockmaar horsemen run toward the gate with the improvised battering ram. KAEL: Forward! Break it down! The battering ram thuds into the gate. It's clearly just a matter of time until the Nockmaar army gets in. Willow runs across a wooden bridge toward the castle, looking for a place to hide. He doesn't see the trolls following him, and when he reaches the building he is stopped by a locked door. KAEL: (supervising the battering ram operation) Again! Again! Willow puts Elora down in a sheltered spot so he can deal with the door more easily. Suddenly, he is confronted by a troll. RAZIEL: (from ground level) Willow, use the wand on that troll! Willow pulls out the wand and zaps the troll with a bolt of energy. WILLOW: Bellanockt! Willow is quite startled at what happens next. The troll falls down, writhing, moaning and smoking, and begins to transform. Its skin is stripped away, leaving a brain-like mass, from which two nasty-looking heads begin to emerge. WILLOW: Eww! He kicks the disgusting thing into the moat, which starts bubbling. Meanwhile, the castle gate is giving way beneath the battering ram. KAEL: Break it down! Forward! The Nockmaar army pours into Tir Asleen and promptly meets with resistance from Madmartigan, who's in position behind the barrel. He shoots several of them with crossbows, then defiantly stands up, roaring and twirling his sword. He doesn't see the massive object rising up behind him. But the Nockmaar soldiers do. They abruptly stop their attack, then turn and run with shouts of "Get out of here!" Madmartigan grins cockily as he watches them go. Then he hears a sound behind him. Nervously, he turns around. For a moment he's stunned by the sight of the huge two-headed eborsisk dragon standing there, then he recovers his wits and runs after the Nockmaar minions. The dragon sends a jet of flame after the fleeing men. No one stops running until they're safely outside the castle gates. They look fearfully at the dragon for a moment, then everyone realizes the same thing: Madmartigan is standing in the middle of the Nockmaar army. KAEL: Get him! Madmartigan runs back into the castle with the minions in hot pursuit, and the battle commences anew. Willow, still at the upper level of the castle, tries to run away from the dragon, but is trapped when the dragon torches the bridge that is the only avenue of escape. SORSHA: (to her soldiers) The other side! As the battle rages, the Nockmaar soldiers are more concerned with the dragon than with Madmartigan. Their arrows rain on it, while in turn it snacks on them. KAEL: Destroy the beast! Find the baby! Raziel butts a soldier off the ramparts. RAZIEL: Ba-a-ah! Take tha-a-at! The Nockmaar soldiers fight with the dragon and with Madmartigan. Willow is confronted by another troll. He tries to throw a magic acorn at the troll but drops it. The acorn falls through a crack in the bridge, turning the planks into stone as it goes. When the troll is momentarily distracted by Elora's crying, Willow pokes it in the backside with a flaming stick and runs past it. But the planks break beneath him. He grabs the troll's legs as he falls, and soon both of them are dangling, saved only by the troll's grip on the broken bridge. Willow climbs to a safe place on the bridge's understructure just before the dragon grabs the troll. Amidst the chaos, Sorsha stops fighting and starts watching Madmartigan. Up above, Willow tries to break open the door as more trolls close in. MADMARTIGAN: Willow! As Sorsha watches, Madmartigan climbs into a catapult, fighting off Nockmaar soldiers as he does so. WILLOW: Madmartigan, help! Madmartigan launches himself from the catapult. MADMARTIGAN: Willoooowww!! He smacks into the side of the castle and clatters down beside Willow, landing on a troll. WILLOW: Hit him, Madmartigan! The troll snarls at Madmartigan. He snarls back, and the troll cringes with fear until Madmartigan kicks it off the bridge. MADMARTIGAN: Here. He hands Willow a sword, then heaves a sigh and leaps onto one of the dragon's heads. The beast shakes its head violently but can't dislodge Madmartigan. The locked door that prevented Willow's escape suddenly opens from the inside, and two Nockmaar soldiers emerge. They see Elora immediately. NOCKMAAR SOLDIER: The baby! They charge at Willow with swords raised. He countercharges with his own sword, driving them back inside the castle. But the sword is really too heavy for him to manage, and they all collapse in an inglorious heap on the floor. To Willow's horror, Kael rides into the room. As Sorsha watches, Madmartigan thrusts his sword through the dragon's head, then falls to the ground. Sword in hand, she approaches him. He thinks the end is near, but she pulls him to his feet and kisses him. The dragon's wounded head whips around frantically, then explodes in a ball of flame. The remaining head crashes to the ground as the beast dies. But the problems of the Nockmaar army aren't over yet. NOCKMAAR SOLDIER: Airks' army! Get Kael! The Galladoorn army is thundering toward the castle of Tir Asleen. NOCKMAAR SOLDIER: Airk's army! The brownies are in Airk's saddlebag. FRANJEAN: We are here! ROOL: You are rescued! FRANJEAN & ROOL: Chaaarge! Kael rides out of the castle, carrying Elora. He sees Madmartigan and Sorsha fighting together against the soldiers of Nockmaar. He rides out with his men to confront Airk's army. KAEL: No mercy! Kael fights his way clear and races toward Nockmaar with Elora. The rest of the Nockmaar soldiers fall. Willow staggers out of the castle with blood running down his face. WILLOW: Elora! MADMARTIGAN: Willow! Willow collapses onto the ground before Madmartigan and Sorsha can reach him. WILLOW: (sobbing) Elora's gone! MADMARTIGAN: Willow... WILLOW: They've taken her. There were too many of them. MADMARTIGAN: Willow, can you ride? Willow looks up. MADMARTIGAN: Let's ride. Pulling himself together, Willow nods in agreement. |
