EXT. FAIRY KINGDOM - NIGHT

Willow comes to a halt. His mouth drops open. The forest is a luminous Milky Way of dancing, flying FAIRIES, like fireflies. The brownies tug at his pant-legs and whisper.

TEEMO: Come on. This is a privilege. Nobody ever gets called before Her Majesty.

Wonder-struck, Willow walks into a clearing where colorful night-flowers bloom. He lowers himself onto an enormous toadstool, testing it with his hand. Other BROWNIES stand watching, like courtiers. The tiny fairies fly up to Willow's face and giggle: they look like five-year-old girls, full of mischief and fun.

Suddenly a strange LIGHT begins to throb behind the trees, piercing the forest with helter-skelter beams. Willow throws up his arms as the bright light stings his eyes.

ROOL: Stand up! It's the queen!

CHERLINDREA, the Fairy Queen, materializes out of fragments of moving light, diaphanous, sylph-like, beautiful.

CHERLINDREA: Willow Ufgood.

WILLOW: (blinded) Yes...?

CHERLINDREA: I hope you are comfortable here, inside my kingdom...

Willow says nothing, still battling the bright light.

TEEMO: Talk! Say something!

WILLOW: I can't see anything--she's too bright!

CHERLINDREA: I'm sorry...

The light diminishes, enabling Willow to see the queen. She is a beautiful vision, with flowing hair and luminous eyes. Her magical presence both stuns and impresses Willow. She turns to the brownies.

CHERLINDREA: Broke-heart of nightingale for our honored guest.

All the courtier brownies snap to attention and go into action, bustling about, going to work, some even tripping over one another. They bring Willow a drink in a delicate cup-shaped leaf, and he takes a sip.

CHERLINDREA: Welcome to my kingdom.

Helter-skelter beams of light pierce the forest. Willow sees the baby asleep in a bassinet and runs to her. Cherlindrea materializes out of the blinding light.

WILLOW: I can't see anything.

CHERLINDREA: I'm sorry...

The light diminishes. Cherlindrea is a beautiful vision, with flowing hair and luminous eyes.

CHERLINDREA: Honey of nightingale for our honored guest. I'm so happy to meet you, Willow Ufgood.

The brownies come out from hiding and bustle about. Willow is given a drink in a cup-shaped leaf. Rool smacks into Franjean and they both land on their butts. The tiny fairies fly up to Willow's face and giggle.

WILLOW: How do you know my name?

The strange light continues to move across the sky and a sort of mist begins to form.

CHERLINDREA: Welcome to my kingdom. A tiny fairy flies up to Willow, kisses him on the nose, and flies away. The mist coalesces into the glowing fairy queen as Willow and Meegosh look on in awe.

CHERLINDREA: I am so happy to meet you, Willow Ufgood.

WILLOW: How do you know my name?

The queen dissolves and reappears near Willow. She leans down and opens the baby's swaddling and looks at the mark on the baby's arm.

CHERLINDREA: It is Elora Danan! The prophecy has come true.

The tiny fairies and the brownies stop work and sigh with respect and amazement. Cherlindrea seems to levitate the baby out of Willow's arms, floating her magically onto a special cradle of straw and sticks. The brownies and fairies crowd around, with great reverence.

WILLOW: You mean, you know who this baby belongs to?

CHERLINDREA: She belongs to all of us. She is the future queen and ruler of all kingdoms on earth.

Cherlindrea dissolves and reappears beside the baby.

CHERLINDREA: Elora Danan told me. Elora, Willow's here.

The baby, ELORA DANAN, opens her eyes.

WILLOW: She's just a baby.

CHERLINDREA: Elora is very special. She is the daughter of the sun and moon... the future empress of all kingdoms.

CHERLINDREA: Elora Danan told me. Elora?

She floats over the baby, who is lying on a blanket on the ground.

CHERLINDREA: Elora, Willow's here.

WILLOW: But she's just a baby!

CHERLINDREA: She's very special. My brownies have been searching for her ever since we heard she was born. Elora Danan has chosen you to be her guardian.

She levitates the baby into Willow's arms as fairies swirl through the air.

Willow starts to get up.

WILLOW: What a relief. Now I can go home.

The queen fragments and reappears right in front of Willow.

CHERLINDREA: No, Willow. Your journey has just begun. It has been foretold that this child shall bring about the downfall of Queen Bavmorda, whose evil powers have darkened our world. Upon you depends this princess's life.

WILLOW: That's a relief. Now I can go home.

CHERLINDREA: No, Willow. Your journey has just begun.

WILLOW: You don't understand. I've got to go back to my family. I'm worried. They need me.

CHERLINDREA: It's you who doesn't understand, Willow. Elora Danan has chosen you to be her guardian.

Cherlindrea levitates the baby out of the bassinet.

WILLOW: Me?

The Fairy Queen flashes and vanishes. Willow lowers himself back down again. She reappears behind him.

CHERLINDREA: You are the guardian, Willow. You must take her to Tir Asleen.

WILLOW: What is Tir Asleen?

Willow can't keep track of her. She keeps changing her shape. The brownies and fairies snicker at Willow's confusion.

CHERLINDREA: It is a distant castle, where a great king and queen will look after Elora Danan and keep her safe until she is old enough to rule.

She is gone again. Willow looks everywhere, frusturated by these riddles and mysteries.

WILLOW: Where is Tir Asleen? How far is it?

She reappears again.

CHERLINDREA: The way has been lost in time. But there is one person, a druid sorceress, who might guide you there. She was exiled by Queen Bavmorda many years ago. Her name is Fin Raziel.

[Willow's selection as guardian was mentioned in the last section of dialogue.]

WILLOW: Me?

CHERLINDREA: Yes. She likes you.

Willow grabs the baby out of mid-air. Cherlindrea fragments then reappears and holds out a MAGIC WAND that looks like an ordinary twig.

CHERLINDREA: Here, take my wand to the sorceress Fin Raziel. She will help you take Elora Danan to the kingdom of Tir Asleen, where a good king and queen will look after her.

[Willow's selection as guardian was mentioned in the last section of dialogue.]

WILLOW: (stunned) Me?

CHERLINDREA: Yes. She likes you! And Elora Danan knows that you have the courage to help us. Take my wand to the sorceress Fin Raziel. She will guide you and Elora Danan to the kingdom of Tir Asleen, where a good king and queen will look after her.

WILLOW: You need a warrior for this job. I'm nobody.

CHERLINDREA: You are very important, Willow.

WILLOW: No I'm not. Have you really looked at me? (jumps to his feet) I'm short! Even for a Nelwyn!

From down at his feet, Rool and Teemo stare up, insulted.

WILLOW: (continuing) Why can't you do it? You have magical powers.

CHERLINDREA: My presence cannot extend beyond this forest. But I can give you these...

WILLOW: Why can't you do it? You've got magical powers.

CHERLINDREA: I wish I could, but my presence cannot extend beyond these woods.

WILLOW: You need a warrior for a job like this. I'm a nobody. (to the baby) You don't want me, Elora. (to Cherlindrea) Tell her. I'm short. Even for a Nelwyn!

CHERLINDREA: You are very important, Willow.

WILLOW: No I'm not. Have you really looked at me? (jumps to his feet) I'm short. Even for a Nelwyn!

From down at his feet, the brownies stare up, insulted. Suddenly Cherlindrea intensifies her light so that Willow backs away, clutching the baby.

WILLOW: You need a warrior for a job like this. I'm a nobody!

Elora laughs at his protest.

WILLOW: Elora, you don't want me! Tell her. I'm short, even for a Nelwyn!

Cherlindrea abruptly vanishes. The Nelwyns and brownies look around in confusion.

Cherlindrea drops three small objects in Willow's hand.

CHERLINDREA: They will protect you. Use them wisely.

Willow looks at them for quite a while.

WILLOW: They look like acorns.

CHERLINDREA: Anything you hurl them at will turn to stone.

Willow looks closely at the acorns, then up at the queen.

WILLOW: They're magic? Are you serious?

[In the late script and movie, Willow gets the acorns from the High Aldwin as he prepares to leave the village.] [In the late script and movie, Willow gets the acorns from the High Aldwin as he prepares to leave the village.]

The forest light grows brighter. The queen looms over Willow and he again has to shield himself from the brightness.

CHERLINDREA: (sternly) I am very serious, Willow. There is no time to lose.

Now she intensifies her light so that Willow backs away, completely covering his face.

WILLOW: But I've got a family to think about! They need me!

The queen swirls around him like a solar wind, blowing the forest trees, scaring even the brownies. And then all of a sudden: silence. And total darkness. ALL WE SEE, in dim moonlight, is Willow's face, peeking out from between his fingers.

WILLOW: Hello...?

The queen's voice echoes the forest.

CHERLINDREA: Bavmorda's powers are growing like an evil plague. Soon she will control the lives of your children, your wife, your village...everyone.

Very gradually and beautifully the fiery fairies begin to flicker, restoring light to the forest. More light gently brightens, bathing the woods, and the Fairy Queen reappears. She is holding Elora Danan in her arms. The brownies creep out from behind the trees. All eyes are upon Willow.

CHERLINDREA: The choice is yours.

Willow takes the baby and looks at her for a moment. He struggles with his conscience. The fairies and brownies wait in anticipation. At last Willow looks up at them, resolved and determined.

WILLOW: I'll do it. Yes, I will, I'll do it!

The fairy kingdom sends up a great cheer and applause. Fairies giggle playfully around Willow's face, and brownies hug his ankles.

WILLOW: But I only have one shoe.

CHERLINDREA: Elora Danan must survive. She must bring about the downfall of Queen Bavmorda, whose powers are growing like an evil plague. [In the movie, this line occurs after Willow's next line.]

She swirls around him like a solar wind. Then: silence. And total darkness. ALL WE SEE in dim moonlight is Willow holding the baby.

WILLOW: Hello...?

Cherlindrea's voice echoes.

CHERLINDREA: All creatures of good heart need your help, Willow. Soon Bavmorda will control the lives of your village... your children... everyone.

The fairies begin to flicker and light gently bathes the woods as Cherlindrea slowly reappears as a huge face. She holds out the wand. The brownies creep out from behind the trees. All eyes are upon Willow.

CHERLINDREA: I cannot make you go, Willow. The choice is yours.

WILLOW: Hello?

Cherlindrea reappears, stern and enormous.

CHERLINDREA: Elora Danan must survive. She must fulfill her destiny and bring about the downfall of Queen Bavmorda, whose powers are growing like an evil plague. Unless she is stopped, Bavmorda will control the lives of your village... your children... everyone. All creatures of good heart need your help, Willow. The choice is yours.

Cherlindrea vanishes. Willow is left to ponder this unexpected turn of events.

EXT. WOODS - DAWN

All is quiet. The tiny brownie fires have burned down. Rool creeps along mischievously, carrying a sack of glittering dust. He sprinkles some dust in the eyes of a sleeping FAIRY. Franjean catches him.

FRANJEAN: Where'd you steal that Dust of Broken Heart?

ROOL: Nowhere. I was just having fun.

FRANJEAN: It belongs to the fairies! It's dangerous. Give that to me.

Franjean tugs it away, sends Rool tumbling, and hooks the sack on his belt. Just then, the fairy wakes up, rubs her eyes, sees Franjean and breaks into a lovesick grin. She attacks him with a barrage of kisses.

FRANJEAN: Get away! Help! Throw water on her!

Willow's feet come into frame as he creeps up to Meegosh, fixed with a new purpose, and whispers.

WILLOW: Wake up, Meegosh. It's time to go home.

MEEGOSH: Home?

He jumps to his feet, eager to go.

WILLOW: How's your arm? Think you'll be able to make it?

MEEGOSH: Oh yeah, it's fine! Perfect! They put something on it.

But he massages his arm, still in pain.

Morning. Willow, carrying Cherlindrea's wand, walks over to where Meegosh is sleeping on the forest floor and taps him on the shoulder.

WILLOW: Hey. Meegosh. Wake up.

Meegosh awakens.

WILLOW: It's time to go home.

MEEGOSH: Home?

He leaps to his feet, beaming with joy.

WILLOW: Listen... I want you to tell Kiaya I love her and I think about her every day....

MEEGOSH: Willow...

WILLOW: ...and tell her I'm not going to let anything happen to the baby.

MEEGOSH: You've made up your mind? (Willow nods) It's gonna be dangerous, Willow -- maybe I should go with you.

WILLOW: Not with that arm, Meegosh. Give Mims and Ranon a hug for me. And don't let Kiaya worry.

WILLOW: Listen, Meegosh. Tell Kiaya I love her, and I think of her every day.

MEEGOSH: (shocked realization) Willow...

WILLOW: And tell her I'm not gonna let anything happen to the baby.

MEEGOSH: You sure you know what you're doing?

WILLOW: I hope so.

MEEGOSH: Be careful. Daikinis say one thing and mean another.

The two friends embrace. Willow starts to leave.

MEEGOSH: Hey! Round the bend...

Willow stops and turns around.

WILLOW: Fat rear end.

MEEGOSH: He's a donkey.

WILLOW: I'm your friend, Meegosh.

They smile the old boyhood smile, as Willow heads off.

MEEGOSH: Are you sure you know what you're doing?

WILLOW: I hope so.

Willow hands a bag of supplies to Meegosh.

MEEGOSH: Listen. Be careful.

They embrace in farewell.

EXT. WOODED HILL - DAY

WE SEE Willow's feet as he walks along. He has himself a brand-new shoe.

Spirits high, he treks in the sunshine, papoose strapped to his back. Teemo rides in his pocket, while Rool straddles the papoose, tickling the giggling baby.

WILLOW: Wait till I tell my children. Stuff like this never happens in my village.

EXT. WOODED HILL - DAY

Franjean and Rool lead the way through the forest. Franjean carries the pouch of magic dust on his belt.

FRANJEAN: This way! This way!

Willow follows, carrying the baby, ducking under brances.

WILLOW: Will it take long to find this Raziel?

FRANJEAN: Not long.

ROOL: She's been exiled to an island just over those hills.

Later, Willow walks across a rugged hillside with the baby on his back and the wand in his hand, led by Rool and Franjean.

ROOL: I know the way, Franjean.

FRANJEAN: You always think you know the way. I am the leader!

WILLOW: How long will it take to find this Raziel?

FRANJEAN: Not long.

ROOL: She's been exiled to an island just over those hills.

WILLOW: She's what??

Rool takes a dramatically spooky stance.

ROOL: By the evil Queen Bavmorda...!

He sticks out his tongue and moans. Franjean yanks him ahead by the sleeve.

FRANJEAN: Rool, you fool! He doesn't need to know everything!

WILLOW: She's what?!

ROOL: Exiled. By the evil Queen... Bavmorda! Aah haa haa haa haa!

FRANJEAN: Rool, you fool, he does not need to know everything!

ROOL: I didn't tell him everything.

FRANJEAN:You told him enough!

ROOL: What did I say?

WILLOW: (interrupting) Wait a minute!

FRANJEAN: You mentioned the island, you mentioned the queen!

The brownies tumble off the end of a log.

ROOL: So?

He digs a magic acorn out of his pocket and tosses it high in the air. The brownies gasp.

TEEMO: Hey, careful there!

WILLOW: How do these work I wonder? I gotta save one to show the High Aldwin.

WILLOW: What are you saying? What do you mean, island?

Willow shakes Cherlindrea's wand at the brownies, who duck.

FRANJEAN: Don't play with that. Cherlindrea told you: it holds vast powers. Only a great sorcerer can use it -- not a stupid peck like yourself!

A branch smacks Willow in the face.

WILLOW: (gesturing with both hands) What do you mean, what are you saying? Mysterious island!

The brownies flinch.

FRANJEAN: Don't play with that wand! Cherlindrea told you, it holds vast powers. Only a great sorcerer can use it, not a stupid peck like you.

Rool chuckles. Franjean points and starts to walk away.

FRANJEAN: This way!

ROOL: No no no I don't think so.

FRANJEAN: (changing direction) All right then, this way.

ROOL: No no. (pointing) This way!

FRANJEAN: This way?!

ROOL: (in Franjean's face) That's what I said!

Rool starts walking away. Franjean hesitates, then points after Rool.

FRANJEAN: This way!

WILLOW: Are you sure you know where you're going?

FRANJEAN: Of course! With us as your guides no harm will befall you.

WILLOW: Are you sure you know where you're going?

FRANJEAN: Of course. With us as your guides no harm will befall you!

ROOL: Look! Death below!

Rool points through the trees. Willow hurries down the hill to the tree-line. In the valley below, 200 NOCKMAAR SOLDIERS and CAVALRYMEN battle a hundred ragtag REBEL TROOPS. From this safe position high on the hillside, Willow watches in disgust. Weapons clash and men fall to their deaths.

WILLOW: Daikinis...

They hear a CLANK behind them. Willow slowly turns around. There is movement in the trees. The hillside woods are full of Nockmaar HORSEMEN moving right up next to him.

In the valley, the outpowered rebels are being forced up the hill toward them. Willow is suddenly standing under several large horses and black-armored minions. He is frozen in fear.

HORSEMEN: Hyaaaaahh!!

Swords flash and the horsemen charge! The brownies jump and run for their lives. Willow stumbles and spins as horse after horse thunders past him, nearly trampling him and the baby to death.

The Nockmaar reinforcements descend upon the remaining rebels and crush them. Willow falls and quickly digs the baby out of the papoose. She is shrieking in terror. He holds her tight and runs along the tree-line, following the brownies, while the bloody battle rages below.

WILLOW: Let's get out of here. Shhh, don't cry, Elora. Things can't get any worse than this...

ROOL: Death below!

Rool points through the trees. Willow hurries down the hill to the tree-line. In the valley below, hundreds of NOCKMAAR SOLDIERS and CAVALRYMEN battle a ragtag squad of REBEL TROOPS. Weapons clash and men fall to their deaths.

WILLOW: Daikinis...

In the valley, the outpowered rebels are being forced up the hill toward them. Willow hears a CLANK beside him and looks up. He is surrounded by several large horses and black-armored minions. Willow is frozen in fear, but they don't notice him. Their leader is GENERAL KAEL. He is a huge powerful and cruel Neanderthal.

KAEL: Hyaaaaahh!! No mercy!

Swords flash and the horsemen charge! The brownies jump and run for their lives. Willow stumbles and spins as horse after horse thunders past him, nearly trampling him.

Elora is shrieking in terror. He holds her tight and runs for the tree-line, following the brownies, while the Nockmaar reinforcements descend upon the rebels and crush them.

WILLOW: Shhh, don't cry, Elora. Things can't get any worse than this...

EXT. ROADSIDE TAVERN - DAY

Bleak rain dribbles down Willow's miserable face. Protecting the baby, he hurries toward a tavern. The bottom of the building is an open stable with several horses. Two burly IRON-WORKERS clank a red-hot wagon rim, fixing a nearby wagon hitched to a horse.

It's a rough place. Rool and Teemo peek out of Willow's pockets. Upstairs PEOPLE drink and shout.

EXT. ROAD - DAY

Bleak rain dribbles down Willow's miserable face as he treks along, trying to protect the baby.

EXT. ROADSIDE TAVERN - DAY

They hurry through the rain toward a tavern. The bottom of the building is an open stable with several horses. Two WORKERS fix a wagon hitched to a horse.

Rool rides in Willow's pocket. Franjean rides under the papoose. He pokes out his head over Willow's shoulder.

Later, Willow slogs along miserably through a downpour with the baby in his arms. He comes to a large, ramshackle building with a few Daikinis unloading kegs in front of it and stops to assess the place. Franjean pops out from the shelter of the papoose basket.

TEEMO: I'm not going in there.

ROOL: Me neither!

WILLOW: Don't worry--I'm a sorcerer. What could possibly happen?

Suddenly there's a CRASH up above and two PICTS burst through a balcony and land in the mud, fighting viciously. Rool and Teemo duck inside Willow's pockets. Willow steps around the Picts, dashes through the stable and up the stairs.

FRANJEAN: We are not going in there!

WILLOW: Elora needs fresh milk.

FRANJEAN: You're not in command here, shorty. I am! We're not going inside and that's an order! You hear me?

FRANJEAN: We are not going in there!

WILLOW: But Elora needs fresh milk. And we're drenched!

FRANJEAN: You are not in command here, shorty. I am! You hear me? Whooaaa!

Franjean tumbles back into the papoose basket as Willow starts toward the building.

INT. TAVERN - MAIN ROOM - DAY

The place is packed with tattooed PICTS, nomadic FAMILIES, MOTHERS with BABIES, THIEVES and CUTTHROATS. Willow enters with the crying baby.

INT. TAVERN - MAIN ROOM - DAY

Minstrels play rustic music. The place is packed with nomadic FAMILIES, MOTHERS and BABIES, ROUGHNECMS, CUTTHROATS and THIEVES. As Willow enters, two tattooed PICTS crash down from a balcony, fighting viciously.

Music plays inside the tavern and a rowdy atmosphere prevails. The Daikinis who notice Willow as he quietly makes his way through the place give him hostile looks. Willow approaches a large barmaid.

WILLOW: Could you spare some milk for this poor hungry baby?

Everyone looks up. Mopping a table is an ugly BARMAID as big as a wrestler.

BARMAID: Get outta here, Peck!

PATRONS: A Peck! Get him out! Beat it, Peck!

They hurl stuff at him and threaten him with their weapons. Willow runs along the wall and takes cover under some stairs. He pulls open his pocket and peers down inside.

WILLOW: Could you spare some milk for this poor hungry baby?

The patrons hurl stuff at him.

PATRONS: Get outta here, peck! Beat it, Peck! Stick him on a spit! Cook him!

Willow runs along the wall and takes cover under some stairs. Franjean pops out from under the papoose and climbs toward Willow's pocket. Rool spots a pretty BARMAID and starts climbing out.

WILLOW: Excuse me? Excuse me, could you spare some milk for this poor hungry baby?

BARMAID: (pelting him with cabbage leaves) Get outta here, peck!

PICT CUSTOMER: Get outta here, or we'll cook you!

Willow hastily retreats to a quiet spot behind the stairs and starts tending to the baby. The brownies pop out from his gear and Rool spots a pretty girl.

ROOL: Look at her! Give me that dust of broken heart, Franjean.

FRANJEAN: No! You can't have it!

Rool grabs the dust and falls backward. Some dust sprinkles in his eyes. He tumbles and lands next to a CAT. Rool rubs his eyes and then grins at the cat amorously.

ROOL: Oooh, look at her. I could use a love potion on her! Franjean, hey! Give me that dust of broken heart! Come on!

Rool grabs the pouch dangling around Franjean's neck and they tussle over it.

FRANJEAN: It's very dangerous, it belongs to the fairies!

Franjean wins the fight, accidentally spilling some of the dust on Rool in the process. Franjean falls from the papoose basket to Willow's pouch, while Rool falls from the pouch to the floor.

WILLOW: Hey, quiet! Wanna get us killed?

Rool gets to his feet, sneezing and rubbing his eyes.

FRANJEAN: Ah, Rooie. Always playing with those fairy love potions.

A cat approaches. Rool gazes at it lovingly.

ROOL: You are so beautiful...!

He kisses the cat. It hisses and shrieks viciously. Rool shoots straight up in the air in fear. Then WE SEE him dashing along a ledge. He stumbles into a vat of beer.

ROOL: Oh...you are so beautiful! Your eyes...your whiskers...I have to kiss you!

He staggers toward the cat with outstretched arms.

FRANJEAN: Rool! That dust of broken heart.

Just before Rool can kiss the cat it yowls at him. Startled, Rool makes a high leap onto one of the wooden steps, then falls off into a barrel of dark liquid. He grabs the side of the barrel, starts to climb out, then pauses, smacking his lips.

ROOL: Beer! Ah ha ha ha ha ha!

He joyously dives back into the barrel.

WILLOW: I could use your help, boys.

Instantly his pocket whips shut and trembles. Willow cautiously looks out under the stairs. He sees a pail of milk very near some ROUGHNECKS. Willow puts his little finger in the baby's mouth, silencing her. He creeps out. And bravely reaches for the milk.

TEEMO'S VOICE: Willow?

Willow slaps his pocket. Then stretches his arm out very, very slowly. And gets the pail and zips back under the stairs.

WILLOW: This is not fun.

He soaks a rag with milk and feeds the baby. Catching his breath, he backs up and leans agains a woodplank wall.

WILLOW: Whoa!

The plank gives way and Willow falls through the wall.

Willow sees a pail of milk next to a family: a MOTHER, CHILD, and FATHER, who is hacking meat with a dagger.

WILLOW: I could use your help, Franjean.

Instantly his pocket whips shut and trembles. Willow puts his finger in the baby's mouth, silencing her. He creeps out toward the milk.

FRANJEAN'S VOICE: Willow?

WILLOW: Shhh, quiet.

Willow slaps his pocket. He stretches out his arm and dips a cloth in the milk. Nearby a nasty little ten-year-old BOY sneers at him. Willow takes the soaked cloth and retreats under the stairs, feeding Elora Danan. Suddenly the nasty boy pokes his head around and glares meanly at Willow. Willow jumps backward against a woodplank wall.

WILLOW: Whoa!

The bottom of the plank gives way and Willow falls through.

A mock battle among the patrons moves closer to Willow's hiding place.

FRANJEAN: (ducking down into Willow's pouch) These people are crazy. This could be bad!

Willow picks up the baby just as one of the combatants comes crashing down next to him. Startled, Willow jumps backward and crashes through the wall.

INT. TAVERN - DAY

Willow somersaults into a bedroom near an unmade bed. Peeking up he sees two women getting dressed in a panic. One is a plump-chested WENCH with a pretty face.

INT. TAVERN - DAY

Willow somersaults into a bedroom near an unmade bed. Peeking up he sees two women getting dressed in a panic. One is a plump-chested WENCH with a pretty face.

He lands on the floor in another room, where a woman is running about frantically grabbing articles of clothing.

WENCH: Hurry! Hurry!

Very frightened, she looks out the window. The other woman, who wears a kerchief over her hair, packs thick powder and make-up paint on her face.

THE OTHER WOMAN: (in a gruff voice) How do I look?

It's Madmartigan! Willow pops up like a jack-in-the-box.

WILLOW: You!!

WENCH: Hurry! Hurry! He's coming!

Very frightened, she looks out the window. The other woman, who wears a kerchief over her hair, packs thick powder and make-up on her face.

THE OTHER WOMAN: (in a gruff voice) How do I look?

It's Madmartigan! Willow pops up like a jack-in-the-box.

WILLOW: Not you!!

WENCH: Hurry! Hurry! My husband's coming. If he catches you here he'll kill us both!

MADMARTIGAN: (wearing a pink dress) How do I look?

WENCH: Cover your face!

WILLOW: (to Madmartigan) Not you?!

MADMARTIGAN: Where the hell did you come from?

Willow strides toward Madmartigan, holding the baby like a machine gun.

WILLOW: I trusted you...

The brownies peek out.

ROOL: Who's he?

MADMARTIGAN: Where the hell did you come from?

WILLOW: I knew I shouldn't have trusted you.

Franjean peeks out of Willow's pocket.

FRANJEAN: Don't I know you?

MADMARTIGAN: (to Willow) Where the hell did you come from?

WILLOW: I knew I shouldn't have trusted you!

FRANJEAN: (to Madmartigan) Don't I know you? I stole the baby from you, Daikini - while you were taking a peepee!

WENCH: (to Madmartigan) Cover your face!

Madmartigan inexpertly wraps a scarf around his head.

MADMARTIGAN: You're crawling with rodents.

MADMARTIGAN: You're crawling with brownies.

WENCH: (shrieks) I hate brownies!!

MADMARTIGAN: (to Willow) You are crawling with brownies.

WENCH: Aahh! I hate brownies!

Franjean cackles, sticks his thumbs in his ears and waggles his fingers at her.

The bedroom door explodes open. In storms a big, mean, half-drunk raging lug named LLUG.

LLUG: Where is he!!

Madmartigan wraps a muffler around his throat. The wench innocently curtsies.

The bedroom door explodes open. In storms a big, mean, half-drunk raging lug named LLUG.

LLUG: Where is he!!

Madmartigan wraps a muffler around his throat. The wench innocently curtsies.

The door bursts open, knocking Willow aside, and a large man storms into the room.

LLUG: Where is he?!

WENCH: Hello, dear.

LLUG: Where?!

WENCH: There's nobody here except me and my, um, cousin.

Llug knocks his wife out of the way and glares suspiciously at Madmartigan, who bats his heavily made-up eyelashes. He speaks in a high feminine voice.

MADMARTIGAN: How do you do.

WENCH: There's nobody here except me and my, um, cousin. (to Madmartigan) Hilda, this is my husband, Llug.

Llug knocks his wife out of the way and glares suspiciously at Madmartigan, who bats his heavily made-up eyelashes. He giggles in a high feminine voice.

MADMARTIGAN: How do you do.

WENCH: There's nobody here but me and, uh, my, uh...

LLUG: I'll kill him!

WENCH: Uhhh, my cousin, Hilda.

WILLOW: Hilda?!

LLUG: Oooh, Hilda!

WENCH: Hilda, this is my husband, Llug.

MADMARTIGAN: (in a high voice) Mmm, big husband. How do you do?

Llug sniffs at Madmartigan then fixes his gaze on Madmartigan's flat chest. He goes to squeeze him there, but Madmartigan ducks out of the way and snatches the baby from Willow.

Llug sniffs at Madmartigan then fixes his gaze on Madmartigan's bulging chest. He goes to squeeze him there, but Madmartigan ducks out of the way and snatches the baby from Willow.

Llug chuckles lecherously and approaches Madmartigan, who backs up against a wall.

LLUG: Hilda, oooh! (grabs at "Hilda's" ample bosom) Come on, girl, don't be shy!

Madmartigan slaps Llug's hand away, then dashes across the room and snatches Elora from Willow.

WILLOW: Hey! Give me that baby!

MADMARTIGAN: (high voice) These Pecks make terrible nursemaids.

WILLOW: Nursemaid?!

Willow angrily jumps up and down, swiping at the baby.

WILLOW: Hey! Give her back!

MADMARTIGAN: These pecks make terrible nursemaids.

WILLOW: Nursemaid?!

Willow angrily jumps up and down, swiping at the baby.

WILLOW: Hey! Give her back!

MADMARTIGAN: (high voice) Pecks make such terrible nursemaids.

WILLOW: (almost inaudible) Nursemaid?!

Willow claws and jumps at Madmartigan, trying to get the baby back.

MADMARTIGAN: (high voice) They get too excited.

With a swing of the hip, Madmartigan butts Willow aside and maternally puts the baby against his chest. Llug hound-dogs him around the room, finally cornering him and staring lecherously into his eyes.

MADMARTIGAN: They get too excited.

Madmartigan butts Willow aside and materally holds the baby against his chest. In the corner WE HEAR a little burp. It's Rool, really drunk.

ROOL: Excuse me. Are we having a party?

Willow scoops him up and stuffs him into his pocket. Llug hound-dogs Madmartigan around the room, finally cornering him and staring lecherously into his eyes.

MADMARTIGAN: (high voice) They get too excited!

Madmartigan gives Willow a good thump, knocking him down. Rool staggers into the room, waving his arms drunkenly.

ROOL: Excuse me! Are we having a party?

He cackles, then tries to dodge as Willow makes a grab for him.

ROOL: Hey! Hey hey!

A laughing Llug corners Madmartigan again. Madmartigan playfully slaps at him.

MADMARTIGAN: (high voice) Stop.

Willow holds Rool high for a moment.

ROOL: Come on, fight like a man!

Willow drops Rool into his pouch.

LLUG: Wanna breeeeeeed?

Madmartigan protects himself by holding the baby up in front of his face. Then he smells the baby. He winces and groans.

WILLOW: (mischievously) Time to change her diaper.

MADMARTIGAN: Time to leave.

LLUG: Wanna breeeeeeed?

MADMARTIGAN: No thank you... Time to leave.

LLUG: Wanna breeeed?

MADMARTIGAN: (high voice) Tempting, but...no!

Madmartigan dodges out of reach but Llug continues to follow him.

MADMARTIGAN: (high voice) Thank you. I have to leave.

WENCH: Bye, Hilda!

Madmartigan throws open the door and dashes out. But he doesn't get very far. Several NOCKMAAR SOLDIERS push him back in. Then they grab Madmartigan and Willow, and Llug and his wife, and haul them all outside.

INT. TAVERN - HALLWAY - DAY

Madmartigan is slammed against a wall. Then Willow. Then Llug and his wife. In the b.g. Nockmaar troops are rousting the tavern, taking babies away from frightened mothers and inspecting them.

Heavy bootsteps thud toward them. Willow looks out and recognizes Sorsha, the black-helmeted knight from the bridge.

Madmartigan throws open the door and dashes out. He doesn't get very far. Several NOCKMAAR SOLDIERS bulldoze him back in. Then grab him and haul him out.

INT. TAVERN - HALLWAY - DAY

The soldiers slam Madmartigan and Willow, and Llug and his wife, against a wall. In the b.g. troops roust the tavern, taking babies from frightened mothers and inspecting them. The brownies fight noisily in Willow's pocket.

As Madmartigan reaches the door it bursts open again, and several Nockmaar soldiers enter the room.

NOCKMAAR LIEUTENANT: Take them out!

The soldiers start dragging everyone into the next room.

SOLDIERS: Right. Come along, peck! Move along! Gather 'em all with the babies!

SORSHA: (to one of the tavern patrons) That baby over there. Let me see its arm. (she inspects it) That's not the one.

To Willow's horror, she approaches Madmartigan next.

SORSHA: You! Are you the mother of that child?

MADMARTIGAN: No. (looks at Llug; in a high voice) I mean yes.

Sorsha strides over to Madmartigan, her sword drawn.

SORSHA: Let me see it.

Madmartigan looks at Willow then back at Sorsha.

MADMARTIGAN: (high voice) I can't.

SORSHA: Let me see it.

SORSHA: You! Are you the mother of that child?

Madmartigan's main concern is Llug, who keeps gawking at him. The soldiers are the least of his problems.

MADMARTIGAN: Yes, yes, of course.

SORSHA: Let me see it.

Willow jumps in front of Madmartigan.

SORSHA: You! Are you the mother of that child?

MADMARTIGAN: (high voice) Yes, yes I am.

SORSHA: Lemme see it.

Willow pushes his way forward.

WILLOW: No! You can't!

Madmartigan looks at Willow then back at Sorsha.

MADMARTIGAN: (high voice) I can't.

SORSHA: Why not?

MADMARTIGAN: (to Willow) Why not?

WILLOW: Because she's sick.

MADMARTIGAN: (to Sorsha) Because she's sick.

WILLOW: No! Don't let her!

Sorsha sweeps Willow aside with her boot.

WILLOW: No! Don't let her!

Sorsha kicks him out of the way.

SORSHA: Give it to me!

Sorsha stabs her sword into the floor like a spike. She grabs for the baby. Instinctively, Madmartigan elbows her away, whacking her hard and knocking her off-balance against a nearby bench. The soldiers tense up, pointing their swords and spears.

Sorsha regains her balance. She rips off her black helmet. Long wild red hair tumbles over her shoulders. She is a young woman, and Madmartigan's eyes pop open. He does his best to keep up his female facade.

SORSHA: I gave you an order, woman.

Sorsha grabs for the baby. Madmartigan elbows her away, knocking her off balance.

The soldiers tense up. Sorsha's Lieutenant points a dagger right at Madmartigan's throat. Sorsha stabs her sword into the floor like a spike and rips off her helmet. Her long wild red hair tumbles over her shoulders. Struck by her beauty, Madmartigan does his best to keep up his facade.

SORSHA: (to Madmartigan) I gave you an order, woman!

She reaches for the baby. Madmartigan resists, and quickly finds a couple of Nockmaar sword points an inch from his nose. Sorsha slams her sword into the floor and yanks off her helmet.

MADMARTIGAN: (high voice) Gawd...you're...beautiful...

SORSHA: You're not a woman.

Sorsha comes right up to Madmartigan, squinting into his eyes. The she rips away his kerchief and muffler.

MADMARTIGAN: By glory... you're beautiful.

SORSHA: You're very strong.

MADMARTIGAN: Thank you.

She squints suspiciously into his eyes. Then she rips away his kerchief and muffler. [In the movie, this action occurs after Sorsha's next line.]

SORSHA: You're no woman!

MADMARTIGAN: (so startled he almost forgets the high voice) You're... beautiful...

SORSHA: And you're very strong.

MADMARTIGAN: (almost high voice) Thank you.

SORSHA: You're no woman!

She yanks his scarf off.

LLUG: Not a woman??!!

All hell breaks loose. Llug charges for Madmartigan's throat. Madmartigan tucks the baby under his arm and dashes right out the window. Llug bulldozes Sorsha and her Lieutenant, and the tavern patrons take advantage of the chaos and stampede for the stairs. Willow dives out the window after Madmartigan.

LLUG: Not a woman??!!

MADMARTIGAN: Gentlemen? Meet Llug.

Madmartigan ducks down. Llug lunges and smashes his fist into the Lieutenant. All hell breaks loose. Madmartigan tucks the baby under his arm and dashes out the window. Llug and the Lieutenant go down grappling, plowing Sorsha aside. The tavern patrons take advantage of the chaos and stampede for the stairs. Willow dives out the window.

WENCH: (pleading) Now, honey...

LLUG: (outraged) Not a woman?!

WENCH: Take it easy...

MADMARTIGAN: (in his own voice) Gentlemen...

LLUG: (louder) Not a woman?!

MADMARTIGAN: ...meet Llug!

Madmartigan ducks as Llug throws a punch at him. Several Nockmaar soldiers are flattened by the blow. Madmartigan makes a run for it.

SORSHA: After them!!

She grabs her sword and waves it at her soldiers who clatter toward the stairs, flinging people out of their way.

EXT. ROADSIDE TAVERN - DAY

Madmartigan jumps off the upstairs balcony and lands in the wagon below. The two iron-workers look up with concern. Then they react with surprise as Madmartigan rips away his disguise.

SORSHA: After them!

Her soldiers clatter toward the stairs.

EXT. ROADSIDE TAVERN - DAY

Madmartigan grabs a rope and falls from the balcony into the wagon below. The rope sends a tied barrel up in the air. He lets the rope go: the barrel falls and an iron-worker dives out of the way. Madmartigan sets down the baby, grabs the reins and begins to go.

SORSHA: After them!

Through the confusion Willow makes a dash for it too, cleverly tripping one of the soldiers by rolling on the floor.

WILLOW: Outta my way!

Madmartigan dashes upstairs, trailed by Willow. Llug is still pounding on one of the Nockmaar soldiers.

SORSHA: To the horses!

On the balcony, Madmartigan slugs one of the men unloading beer kegs and uses the rope and pulley to get to the beer wagon waiting below. He stows the baby in a safe corner and whips up the horses. Still on the balcony, Willow races after him.

WILLOW: Madmartigan! Wait!

Up above, Willow charges along the balcony. Madmartigan juggles the baby and whips the reins. The wagon pulls away, iron-workers scrambling after it. Willow flings himself off the balcony. The brownies tumble out of his pocket. They all land in the back of the wagon as it takes off.

It has stopped raining. In the stable under the tavern, horses smash together and people fall in the mud, and the Nockmaar soldiers get tangled up in the traffic jam.

WILLOW: Madmartigan! Wait!

Willow charges along the balcony and jumps. As he lands in the wagon, the brownies tumble out of his pocket. The wagon takes off as people fall in the mud, and the Nockmaar soldiers get tangled up in the traffic jam.

WILLOW: Madmartigan! Madmartigan, wait!

Willow leaps off the balcony and makes a rough landing in the back of the wagon, spilling brownies all over the place. The wagon gathers speed as the Nockmaar soldiers mount up.

LLUG: (running behind the wagon) He's not a woman!!
