Act I FADE IN:
EXT. NOCKMAAR CASTLE - DAY
Under gloomy sky WE HELICOPTER DOWN until WE SEE a huge fortress on a volcanic
mountainside. From within WE HEAR the agonizing scream
of a woman giving birth.
INT. NOCKMAAR CASTLE - DAY
The scream continues as WE MOVE THROUGH the grim corridors of the castle TOWARD
stairs leading down to a dungeon. |
A deep mist swirls across the screen, accompanied by a clap of thunder. Words appear, superimposed on the mist: IT IS A TIME OF DREAD . . . SEERS HAVE FORETOLD THE BIRTH OF A CHILD
SEIZING ALL PREGNANT WOMEN IN THE REALM,
|
|
INT.. DUNGEON - DAY Silhouetted in shadows, three Nockmaar MINIONS stand guard. In a jail cell, six fully pregnant WOMEN watch from behind iron bars. The screaming stops. There's a moment of silence. As WE MOVE INTO another jail cell WE HEAR a slap and the first cry of a newborn BABY. In the cell a black-robed DRUID watches intensely as ETHNA, a midwife, leans over the MOTHER and wraps the baby in swaddling. |
INT. DUNGEON - DAY As WE MOVE DOWN the dungeon stairs, the screaming stops. Silhouetted in shadows, three Nockmaar GUARDS stand outside a jail cell where six fully pregnant WOMEN watch from behind iron bars. WE HEAR a slap and the first cry of a newborn baby. |
Accompanied by the sound of more thunder, we hear the cry of a newborn baby. The crying child is lifted into the frame by the hands of the midwife, Ethna. As the hopeless-looking women filling a prison cell look on, a stern female voice inquires: |
|
DRUID: Is it a girl? ETHNA: It is a girl. DRUID: Show me its arm. Ethna peels back the swaddling. On the baby's arm is a small marking. |
SORSHA: (O.S.) Is it a girl? ETHNA: (O.S.) Yes. SORSHA: (O.S.) Show me its arm. ETHNA: (O.S.) It bears the marking. |
SORSHA: Is it a girl? ETHNA: Yes. SORSHA: Show me its arm. ETHNA: (grimly) She bears the mark. The caged women react with alarm. The mother of the child cries out in distress and terror. MOTHER: (sobbing) No! |
DRUID: It's true then. I must tell Queen Bavmorda. With great urgency the druid hurries up the dungeon stairs. Ethna gently places the baby on the mother's breast. The mother comforts the baby lovingly until it stops crying. Then she reaches out and clasps the midwife's wrist. |
SORSHA, a plainly-dressed teenage girl with long red hair, hurries PAST CAMERA, followed by a robed DRUID. SORSHA: The omen is true. I must tell my mother. ETHNA, a midwife, leans over the MOTHER and wraps the BABY in swaddling. On the baby's arm is a small marking. Ethna gently places the baby on the mother's breast, and the baby stops crying. The mother clasps Ethna's wrist. |
A robed druid walks across the screen and meets Sorsha coming out of the mother's cell, followed by another druid. SORSHA: The omen is true. I must tell my mother. She leaves the dungeon, followed by the druids. The mother of the child looks up at the midwife and pleads with tears in her eyes. |
|
MOTHER: Ethna, please. Help me. They're going to kill my baby. Ethna nervously looks out at the guards, then shakes her head at the mother. ETHNA: They'll kill you. MOTHER: Please save my baby. Ethna hesitates. Then decides. She quickly wraps together some rags and gives them to the mother. ETHNA: Pretend this is the child. MOTHER: Thank you, Ethna. Thank you. |
MOTHER: Ethna, please. Help me. They're going to kill her. Afraid for herself, Ethna looks out at the guards, then shakes her head at the mother. ETHNA: Queen Bavmorda will kill you if you try to stop her. MOTHER: Save my baby. Take her far away... Please! Ethna hesitates. Then decides. She quickly bundles some rags into the shape of a baby and gives them to the mother. MOTHER: Ethna... thank you. |
MOTHER: Please help me! ETHNA: I can't. MOTHER: They're going to kill her! Grimacing, Ethna hesitates, looks closely at the baby, then makes her decision. She conceals the infant in a basket of rags, while the mother continues to sob. MOTHER: Oh thank you, Ethna, thank you! |
|
The mother kisses her baby and hands it to Ethna, who hides the baby inside the basket of rags. Ethna carries the basket past the guards and up the stairs. The mother lies back and sighs with relief. Then she hears clinking bootsteps and her eyes widen with fear. QUEEN BAVMORDA sweeps down the dungeon stairs, her black robes flowing behind her. The druid hurries alongside. BAVMORDA: We will start the ritual at dusk. You're certain this is the one? DRUID: It bears the markings. BAVMORDA: I must see for myself! Just as the omen foretold! The guards fearfully move aside as Bavmorda enters the cell. |
She kisses her baby and hands her to Ethna, who hides her inside a basket of rags. Ethna carries the basket past the guards and cowers as QUEEN BAVMORDA swoops down into the dungeon. Sorsha and the druid hurry alongside. Ethna and the guards fearfully move away as Bavmorda enters the cell. Ethna hurries up the stairs. |
Clutching the basket, Ethna barely sets foot outside the cell when she encounters an arriving group of people: Bavmorda, several guards and druids, and Sorsha. Death Dogs bark in the background. GUARD: Stand aside for Queen Bavmorda! Ethna obediently steps aside, bowing deeply. When the group has passed Ethna hastily leaves the castle, passing a cage of snarling Death Dogs and a pair of mounted soldiers along the way. The Queen and her companions enter the mother's cell. The mother clutches a bundle of cloth to her chest, making it appear that she's holding the baby. |
|
BAVMORDA: So. You *were* the one. MOTHER: Yes. But nothing you can do will stop the prophecy. BAVMORDA: This child will have no power over me.... |
BAVMORDA: So. You were the one. MOTHER: You cannot change the prophecy. BAVMORDA: This child will have no power over me. Start the ritual. |
MOTHER: You cannot stop the prophecy! BAVMORDA: This child will have no power over me. (glancing toward a druid) Start the ritual. |
|
Bavmorda grabs the rags away from the mother and anxiously tears them apart. BAVMORDA: (furiously) Where's the baby! One of the guards looks up the stairs. GUARD: The midwife! Bavmorda flies into a rage. BAVMORDA: Find that baby! Use the dogs! Sorsha! |
Bavmorda grabs the rags and tears them apart. BAVMORDA: Where is the baby! SORSHA: The midwife! Bavmorda flies into a rage, intensely pointing her finger at Sorsha, while the mother rants. BAVMORDA: Find that baby, Sorsha! Use the dogs! Bring her back to me alive! |
Bavmorda wrenches the bundle of cloth away from the mother. MOTHER: No! BAVMORDA: Where's the baby?! SORSHA: The midwife! BAVMORDA: Find that baby, Sorsha! Use the Dogs. Bring her back to me alive! |
|
Two guards draw swords and charge upstairs. Bavmorda grabs the third guard and nods toward the mother. BAVMORDA: Kill her. Bavmorda storms away with the druid. WE SEE the shadow of the guard move over the terrified mother. War drums begin to beat out an alarm. |
MOTHER: My daughter will destroy you, Bavmorda! Your
reign of terror is at an end! You can't stop her!
During this, Sorsha obediently charges upstairs followed
by two of the guards. Bavmorda turns to the third guard, as the mother keeps ranting. BAVMORDA: Kill her. |
MOTHER: Your reign of terror is at an end! She will come back and she will finish you! GUARD: Silence, wench! MOTHER: My baby will finish you! BAVMORDA: (calmly) Kill her. |

RANON: What's a Daikini? WILLOW: Daikinis are big: giants who live far away. |
Willow is shocked at the sight of the baby. WILLOW: Don't go near it! We don't know where it's been. MIMS: But Dada, it's a baby! RANON: It's not like us. WILLOW: No. It's not a Nelwyn. Looks like a Daikini baby! RANON: What's a Daikini? WILLOW: Daikinis are big - giants, who live far away. |

MIMS: Ooh, it's so cute... WILLOW: Mims! Get back here! It might bite you. Willow drags Mims away. Then the baby starts crying. RANON: Can't we keep it, Dada? WILLOW: Absolutely not. |
The baby seems to smile at him. MIMS: Ooh, she's so cute... WILLOW: Mims! Careful. It might bite.

|
BURGLEKUTT: Ufgood! Willow Ufgood! Willow, in a sudden panic, sees BURGLEKUTT in the distance. He splashes into the river, grabs the raft, plunks it on the bank and tries to hush the crying baby. WILLOW: Shhh, shhh! It's the Prefect -- that's all I need. Mims, Ranon, keep this thing hidden... |
BURGLEKUTT: Ufgood! Willow Ufgood! Willow, in a sudden panic, hears BURGLEKUTT the village Prefect in the distance. WILLOW: Shhh, shhh! It's the Prefect -- that's all I need. Keep quiet. Don't touch it. |
Just then a loud, obnoxious voice shouts offscreen. BURGLEKUTT: Ufgood! Willow Ufgood! WILLOW: Shhh! It's the Prefect! That's all I need. Keep it quiet! Don't touch it! |
|
EXT. UFGOOD FARM - DAY Burglekutt's beady eyes spot Willow making a mad dash for his plow. Swinging his fat stomach, he angrily points his walking stick and goes after him. KIAYA: Mr. Burglekutt! He hasn't done anything wrong! Willow's wife KIAYA chases Burglekutt across the field, her beautiful long hair flowing behind her. Willow quickly gets behind his plow like he's been there all day. BURGLEKUTT: Ufgood! What do you think you're doing! I sell the planting seeds in this village. KIAYA: I told him we didn't steal it, Willow. Burglekutt furiously scoops a handful of seeds out of Willow's sack and shakes them under Willow's nose. BURGLEKUTT: You haven't paid your debts. Where did you get these seeds? With pride, Willow puts his arm around his wife. WILLOW: In the forest. My family's been gathering them since last fall. There's no law against that, Burglekutt. |
EXT. UFGOOD FARM - DAY Willow's wife KIAYA chases Burglekutt across the field, her beautiful long hair flowing behind her. Willow quickly zips behind his plow like he's been there all day. Burglekutt furiously scoops a handful of seeds out of Willow's sack and shakes them under Willow's nose. KIAYA: Mr. Burglekutt! My husband hasn't stolen anything! BURGLEKUTT: Ufgood! You still haven't paid your debts to me. Where did you get these seeds? Willow brushes Burglekutt's hand away. WILLOW: Maybe I used my magic. BURGLEKUTT: You're no sorcerer, Ufgood. You're a clown. I sell the planting seeds around here. Now tell me where you got these. With pride, Willow puts his arm around his wife. WILLOW: My family's been gathering these seeds in the forest since last fall. There's no law against that, Mr. Burglekutt. |
Willow hurries back to the field, leaving his children with the baby. Burglekutt is stalking across the farm, followed by Willow's wife, Kiaya. KIAYA: Mister Burglekutt! My husband hasn't stolen anything! BURGLEKUTT: Baahhh! Willow hastily takes his place behind the plow and pretends to be working as they come up to him. BURGLEKUTT: Ufgood! You still haven't paid your debts to me. (grabbing a handful of seeds from a sack in a cart) Where did you get these seeds? WILLOW: Well....maybe I used magic! BURGLEKUTT: (chuckling) You're no sorcerer, Ufgood. You're a clown. I sell the plant seeds around here. (throwing the handful of seeds at Willow) Now tell me where you got them! WILLOW: (throwing an arm around his wife) My family's been gathering them in the forest since last fall. There's no law against that, Mr. Burglekutt! |
|
Suddenly the children laugh in the distance. KIAYA: Willow! You left the children alone by the river?? In alarm she runs off before Willow can stop her. Burglekutt sweeps the horizon with his walking stick. BURGLEKUTT: Too late, Ufgood. You'll never get your planting done before the rains start. You're gonna lose this land. He raises the seeds high above his head, then smashes them down at Willow's boots. He waddles away toward two of his MEN who wait by the road. Then: Kiaya SHRIEKS from the river. Burglekutt stops in his tracks and shakes his head as if to say "the whole family's crazy." Off he trudges. Willow watches and waits. Then runs as fast as he can to the river. |
Suddenly the children laugh in the distance. KIAYA: Where are the children? Willow, you didn't leave them alone by the river? In alarm she runs off before Willow can stop her. Willow nervously keeps one eye on the riverbank as Burglekutt sweeps the horizon with his walking stick. BURGLEKUTT: Magic! You'll need magic if you expect to get your planting done before the rains start. He dashes the seeds against Willow's boots, then grabs Willow by the collar. BURGLEKUTT: I will have this land, Ufgood, and you will end up working in the mines. He lets go of Willow and arrogantly turns away, walking right into the hog. It grunts and butts him into the mud. |
Suddenly the children laugh in the distance. KIAYA: Willow! You didn't leave them alone by the river?! Kiaya hurries away toward the children. Willow is clearly worried by this development, but he can't do anything without raising questions. BURGLEKUTT: (pointing his finger at Willow) Magic? You'll need magic if you expect to get your planting done before the rains start. Willow moves to pick up his seed bag, turning his back on the Prefect, but Burglekutt grabs Willow's shirt and drags him back until they're face to face. BURGLEKUTT: I will have this land, Ufgood, and you're gonna end up working in the mines. Willow angrily pushes Burglekutt away and hangs the seed bag over his shoulder. As soon as Burglekutt leaves, Willow drops the seed bag and runs back toward the river. |
|
EXT. RIVER - DAY Kiaya cradles the baby in her arms. Willow runs up, and with patriarchal authority, puts his fists on his hips. WILLOW: Absolutely, under no condition, is anyone in this family going to fall in love with that baby. They all fall in love as he speaks. The children follow Kiaya up on the bank, walking right past Willow. WILLOW: Kiaya! We can't keep that baby. Mims, Ranon. Hey! I will not be ignored! Ignored, Willow huffs after them across his unplowed field. |
EXT. RIVER - DAY Kiaya cradles the baby in her arms. Willow frantically runs up with patriarchal authority. KIAYA: (lovingly) Oh Willow... WILLOW: Kiaya, absolutely, under no condition, is anyone in this family going to fall in love with that baby. The baby laughs and they all fall in love with her all the more. The children follow Kiaya up the bank, walking right past Willow. WILLOW: Hey! I will not be ignored! Ignored, Willow huffs after them across his unplowed field. |
When Willow arrives at the riverbank, Kiaya is bent down, holding the baby and fussing over it with the children. KIAYA: (to the baby) You're lovely. Yes you are. WILLOW: (stopped in his tracks by the horror of it all) Kiaya!! KIAYA: (looking up at him joyfully) Oh, Willow! She turns her attention back to the baby. Willow moves in closer as Kiaya stands up. WILLOW: (gesturing forcefully) Absolutely, under no condition, whatsoever, is anyone in this family to fall in love with that baby! During this speech, Kiaya continues to fuss over the baby, then walks right past Willow without a glance in his direction. KIAYA: (to the children) Come on then. Come on. Come on. Come on. The children follow her as Willow looks on in disbelief. WILLOW: Hey! I will not be ignored! (then, seeing that he is being ignored) Mims? Ranon? Willow flings his arms down in disgust, and follows his wife and children. Outside his hut, he kicks the ground angrily and storms into the house, after a quick look around to make sure no one has seen what is happening. |
|
INT. UFGOOD HOUSE - DAY Willow nervously paces as Kiaya pours water in a wood tub and the children entertain the naked baby with sticks and brightly colored cloths, apparatus for a magic trick. WILLOW: This is bad. If we're caught with that little Daikini it'll be the end of us. Careful, Ranon, I need that for the festival. (indicates magic cloth) Kiaya, what are we going to do? KIAYA: We're gonna give this baby a bath. The baby squeals with joy as Kiaya lifts her into the bath. WILLOW: Burglekutt's right. There's not enough time to finish plowing. We'll lose everything and I'll end up working in the mines. He shudders at the thought. |
INT. UFGOOD HOUSE - DAY Willow paces nervously as Kiaya pours water in a wooden
tub. The house is cluttered with magic act props.
WILLOW: This is terrible, Kiaya. If we're caught with
her it'll be the end of us. What are we going to do?
KIAYA: We're going to give her a bath. Now don't be such a ninny-goat.
As Kiaya lifts her into the bath, the baby giggles.
MIMS: Isn't she cute? Look at her toes.
Ranon plays with some colored feathers and cloths.
WILLOW: Careful with that, Ranon. I need it for the festival tomorrow. Kiaya looks closely at the baby's arm. On it is a small birthmark in a circular design. |
Inside, Kiaya is bathing the baby and discovers a strange, runelike mark on the child's arm. |
|
KIAYA: Willow, do you think we should take her to the Village Council? WILLOW: No, no! They'll think it's a bad omen. There'll be a flood or a drought or a plague and everybody'll blame me for it! RANON: Look. What's that? Willow leans forward. On the baby's shoulder is a small branded scar in a circular design. It only adds to Willow's fears. WILLOW: I don't know. This is trouble. I'll talk to the High Aldwin about it tomorrow at the Festival. The baby kicks and splashes and giggles in the bath. |
KIAYA: Honey, do you think we should take her to the Village Council? WILLOW: No! They'll think it's a bad omen! There'll be a flood or a drought and they'll blame me for it! (paces and gestures) "Ufgood brought around that Daikini, didn't he?" "That's right, and he's a lousy farmer too!" "Let's get him." |
KIAYA: Willow, do you think we should take her to the village council? WILLOW: No! No, they'll think it's a bad omen! There'll be a flood or a drought, and everyone'll blame me for it! (mockingly:) "Willow Ufgood brought 'round that Daikini, didn't he? That's right, and he's that lousy farmer, too! Let's get him! Aaahhhh!" |
|
KIAYA: Willow, calm down. WILLOW: Calm down?? Kiaya! Tomorrow's my big day! I'm about to become apprentice to the High Aldwin. KIAYA: Love, the High Aldwin hasn't picked a new apprentice in years. WILLOW:Tomorrow's going to be different. He's going to pick me. And this little baby's not going to ruin it. The baby cries. Kiaya wraps her in a sheet and holds her out to Willow.
WILLOW: Hey, I don't want her, Kiaya.
KIAYA: Hold her while I get some milk.
WILLOW: I don't want anything to do with her. The baby keeps crying. Finally Willow takes her in his arms. Instantly, she becomes quiet and content. RANON: She likes you, Dada. Willow squints at the baby. She smiles at him. He can't help but smile back. |
KIAYA: (chuckling) Willow, calm down! WILLOW: Calm down? Kiaya, tomorrow's my big day! KIAYA: Love, the High Aldwin hasn't picked a new apprentice in years. WILLOW:Tomorrow's gonna be different. I just know he's gonna pick me! The baby starts to wail. Kiaya picks her up, and attempts to hand her to Willow. KIAYA: Here. WILLOW: (with his hands in the air) Hey, no! KIAYA: Hold her! WILLOW: I don't wanna, Kiaya! KIAYA: Hold her while I get some milk! Kiaya successfully thrusts the baby into Willow's arms. WILLOW: Oh, no, no, ohhh.... Willow rolls his eyes with disgust. Suddenly the baby stops crying, and Willow looks at her. He and the baby gaze at each other for a long moment. RANON: Dada, she likes you! The baby smiles. Willow smiles back, and begins to rock her. |
