| 2003 NEWS & UPDATES Willow Movie, George Lucas, Warwick Davis, Val Kilmer, fanpage |
| December 3, 2003 |
|
Take a look at the Merchandise/Action Figures section for updated information on the special limited edition Willow figure. When I first reported on this figure, I didn't know if it was genuine. Now I know that it's the real thing all right, and I've got better pictures and more information. I still don't know much about availability, but if I learn anything new I'll report it right away! The Production Art section has been updated to include eight intriguing new pictures from the book Monsters and Aliens from George Lucas by Bob Carrau. The Art section was pretty big already and it became excessive with these new additions, so I've created separate subsections for Props and Fan Art, all available through the main Art section. A chapter on Madmartigan has been added to the Articles section's ongoing Sourcebook project, joining the chapter on Willow himself. More chapters will be added in future updates. On November 22, Val Kilmer and Warwick Davis were guests at
Autographica in Coventry, England in
their first appearance together since Willow. I learned about this on
The Official Warwick Davis Web Site
just a few hours before the event began; I didn't post an immediate update since there
was so little time left, although I did notify some friends privately.
But there's plenty of advance warning for this next item:
Val Kilmer is coming to the
London Film & Comic Con on March 6-7,
2004 in Wembley, England. No word yet on whether Warwick will be there too! Val Kilmer
rarely makes appearances like this, but Warwick Davis makes a lot of them; for
more information, check the
Personal Appearances
section on Warwick's website, or check the
Conventions
and Personal Appearances section on my other webpage.

The Willow Sourcebook contains a wealth of fascinating detail about the world of Willow, but it has been out of print for years and is somewhat difficult to find. That's a problem for the fans, but I have problems of my own; it's becoming harder and harder to find new articles and other printed material for the webpage. There's an easy way to solve both problems at the same time, and in today's update I've started a reprint of the sourcebook in the Articles section, down in the Other Material subsection. The material that's online right now starts at the beginning of the book and continues to the end of the first real chapter. I intend for this to be a long-term project, so it'll be quite a while before the complete sourcebook is online. Those of you who can't wait that long are encouraged to try the auctions on eBay; the sourcebook is sometimes available there. As I mentioned in my last update, I've started a new policy of periodically rotating my page header. Another new header is making its debut today. I recently acquired some of the professional key art files for the DVD poster, which is basically the same as the front cover of the DVD. I discovered that the bottom layer of the artwork is a nice mountain landscape that's completely invisible on the DVD due to the large number of picture elements on top of it. I used this mountain scenery as the foundation of the header, and added some character photos that are loosely based on the DVD's back-cover artwork. The DVD poster itself is now on display in the Merchandise/Posters section. There are two versions, actually; a horizontal one and a vertical one. That's not all that's new in the Posters section; I've added some additional pictures of lobby cards. Check out the Merchandise/Action Figures section for a look at a special-edition
Willow figure that was recently offered on eBay. At least it said it was a special-edition
figure; I haven't been able to prove or disprove its authenticity. The figure itself
seems to be the easily available green-shirt Willow that was produced back in the 80's.
However, the packaging is very unique and is based on a rarely-seen photo. I happen
to have a copy of this photo and a couple of others that were never put on the webpage
for the simple reason that I forgot about them. This oversight has now been
corrected, and the photos are on view in the Pictures section in Movie Pictures Part 16.

| October 19, 2003 - New Willow fanpage |
|
It's time to celebrate, because a new Willow fansite has hit the web. Galladoorn: a Willow Page is still under construction but already has some great features, including several chapters of the Willow novelization and the beginnings of a Characters section with pictures and descriptive excerpts from the novelization. So have fun with this new page, and let's all wish Wes, the webmaster, the best of luck as he continues to develop this exciting new website. Notice anything different on this website? When I changed hosts a couple of years
ago I also had to change the name of the page. Taalcon, the former webmaster, made a
header for me to use at that time. By the time I received it I had already formatted everything
for a different header, and I needed to figure out how to do a little tweaking on
Taal's header before I could actually use it. I've FINALLY done this now, and I've
also created an additional header that's loosely based on the DVD artwork. I plan
to rotate these two new headers with my old header just to liven things up a little.
That's Taal's header at the top of the page right now - cool, huh?

| October 10, 2003 - Burglekutt's return |
|
Good news - the webpage of Mark Northover (aka Burglekutt) is back online. I'm not sure how long it was missing in action; several weeks at least, and maybe several months. Naturally, I've restored it to the Links section. The content seems to be the same as before, but it's a good sign that the page has reappeared. As long as someone out there is interested in keeping it online, there's a chance that we could see an update someday. Interested in special effects work? There are a couple of new items in the Pictures section. ILM Photos Part 2 has a new photo related to the fairies, while ILM Photos Part 4 has a new pic showing a troll doing some bluescreen work. There are also a couple of new items in the Merchandise section to interest the
collectors among us. Merchandise/Miscellaneous/Paper Goods has pictures of a nifty
folder produced by Ziploc that features Willow artwork that was used on the graphic
novel and elsewhere. Meanwhile, Merchandise/Miscellaneous/Other has pictures of an
additional Wendy's Kids' Meal box. I still don't know how many different boxes there
were, but we can be sure that there were at least two.

| August 31, 2003 - Willow event at Dallas Comic Con in October |
|
Warwick Davis (Willow himself) will be making an appearance at the Dallas Comic Con, to be held on October 25-26, 2003. Warwick makes a lot of convention appearances, and you can learn about the standard ones here on my other webpage. But the Dallas appearance is unique; according to the Coolwaters Productions event calendar, the event will include a special Behind the Scenes of Willow screening, and more Willow guests are expected to appear. Their names haven't been announced yet, but I won't be surprised if David Steinberg (aka Meegosh) is one of them - he's made a couple of previous convention appearances with Warwick. I've never seen such a Willow-oriented appearance, and the fans who are lucky enough to be near Dallas should take advantage of it! Go to the Art section, and scroll down to the Props subsection near the bottom of the
page. You'll see some new material added on the subject of brownie arrows. Some alleged prop
arrows were sold on eBay a few weeks ago. I still can't figure out if they're
the real thing or not, but trivia fans will have fun weighing the evidence.

| July 20, 2003 - George Lucas The Creative Impulse |
|
Check the Articles section for yet another picture-rich book excerpt. This
time the book in question is George Lucas the Creative Impulse: Lucasfilm's
First Twenty Years, by Charles Champlin. This excellent, lavishly illustrated
book is a must for all serious George Lucas fans. What's presented here is just
part of the section related to Willow. You'll find the link to it near the
bottom of the Articles section under Other Articles.

| June 7, 2003 - Chris Claremont interview |
|
There's a newly posted article from Starlog #219 (October 1995) in the Articles section. This interview with author Chris Claremont discusses the writing of Shadow Moon, the first book in the Shadow War trilogy. The article is a bit odd because it strongly insists that the book has nothing to do with the movie, and states that Elora is the protagonist. It doesn't mention that the story is told from Willow's point of view; in fact, it fails to mention that he's in the book at all. Nevertheless, the fans of the novels are sure to find it interesting. The Pulp Film website recently posted a review of the book series
here.
Shadow War reviews are hard to find, so this is a welcome addition to the web.

| May 10, 2003 - Into the Digital Realm |
|
Industrial Light + Magic: Into the Digital Realm is a spectacular book, with over three hundred pages of information on special effects work, illustrated by hundreds and hundreds of wonderful color photos. The Willow-related pictures and captions are now on view in the Articles section - look near the bottom of the page, in the Other Articles subsection. And buy this book if you can - it's gorgeous! The Art section has also been revamped to accomodate the numerous production drawings from the book. But that's not the only thing that's new in this section - if you look in the Fan Art subsection, you'll see a great new Shadow Wars wallpaper by Mattman of the Pulp Film website. Thanks for the contribution, Matt! There's artwork of a different kind in Merchandise/Action Figures at the bottom
of the page in the Eborsisk subsection. It's a 3-piece resin model of a two-headed
dragon based on the Eborsisk, by Tony McVey. It's not really an action figure of course,
but that seemed like the best place to put it.

| April 19, 2003 - Twilight Zone magazine article and more |
|
The centerpiece of today's update is a great double article from the August 1988 issue of Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone Magazine. It's down near the bottom of the Articles section, in the Other Articles subsection. The main article is a movie preview that's a little more intellectual than most, and there's a supplemental article on French artist Jean "Moebius" Giraud and the production art he created for the movie. Fans of Meegosh, rejoice! For a long time there was a severe lack of good links
for David Steinberg, the talented actor who played the character, but now Coolwaters
Productions has posted an online biography
of him with pictures. You can check it out (along with Coolwaters' Warwick Davis
biography) in the Links section.

| March 19, 2003 - An interview with Mark Vande Brake |
|
I thought it was incredibly cool when The Big Big Willow/Shadow Moon Homepage published an exclusive interview with Mark Vande Brake (Ranon) in April 1998. But now things have gotten even more exciting. Mark is still kind enough to grant interviews to fan pages, and this time around he's talking to me! The interview is posted in the Articles section, but the quickest way to find out what he has to say is to click here. As if that wasn't exciting enough, there's another new item in the Articles section. In the Other Articles subsection, you'll now find an excerpt from the book George Lucas Companion with some interesting insights into the history of Willow. The official webpage of Mark Northover (Burglekutt) went offline recently, and it looks
to me as though the reason is that his server stopped hosting webpages. In that case, the
page may come
back again someday. Until it does, I've revised the URL in the Links section to go to a
copy of the page on Archive.org so the fans can still enjoy it.

| February 15, 2003 - Pictures and more |
|
Pictures/ILM Photos Parts 1 and 2 has a couple of new shots relating to the work on the final transformation of Raziel. I've also added a couple of items to the Merchandise section.
Merchandise/Miscellaneous/Informational & Promotional has a new picture down at the
very bottom of the page of a display stand that was used to market the first video
release of the movie. And Merchandise/Miscellaneous/Flat Goods has a picture of a
Willow school folder featuring the cover art from the graphic novel.

| January 12, 2003 - Willow in pop culture |
|
Thanks to Quentin Scouflaire, the Miscellanea/Pop Culture Tributes section now has more information on Willow references on the album Angels Fall First by the Finnish metal band Nightwish. The are also a couple of additions to the Merchandise section. Miscellaneous/Informational
and Promotional has some new information on a press kit for the movie's initial video release. It
also notes that the August '88 issue of Twilight Zone magazine had a story about Willow, but
since I haven't actually laid hands on this magazine I can't comment on the article.
