Trading Cards

Ziploc released a series of six 2½" x 5" cards as a promotion during the theatrical release of Willow. The cards came free in packages of Ziploc sandwich bags (one card per box), and included the Brownies, Sorsha, Queen Bavmorda, General Kael, Willow, and Madmartigan.

Folders

Beatrice-Hunt Wesson printed four 9½ x 12 inch school folders. The folders have pictures on the front and back and are plain white on the inside, with 'Peter Pan Peanut Butter' printed in black on the left pocket and 'Ziploc' printed on the right. I don't know what one had to do to obtain these folders, but they came as a complete set, sealed in plastic wrap with a note that said 'Thank you for participating in the free Willow school folder offer from Ziploc brand sandwich bags and Peter Pan peanut butter.' The edges of the pictures below are slightly cut off because the folders were a little too large for my scanner.

And here is a set of four school folders that Ziploc sent in exchange for some proofs of purchase and (I think) a small amount of cash. Each folder has four pictures printed on the inside pockets and a plain back cover. The left sides of the pictures are a little cut off; once again, the folders were too big to fit in the scanner.

In addition to this set of four, Ziploc issued a folder featuring artwork from the cover of the graphic novel, with artwork of Willow himself on the back cover. Both front and back covers are shown below. Inside, the folder has four photos similar to those in the other Ziploc folders.

Stickers

These six stickers were issued in one long strip that measured 3" x 24½" and was folded in the middle. Note how the direction of 'up' alternates; this provides some visual interest but makes it difficult to look at all of them at the same time. Some of the colors look a bit faded; I don't know if that's a flaw in the original printing, or if some of the ink didn't hold up well against the passage of time.

I don't know anything about the original distribution of the stickers. I bought them from an Ebay seller in Spain in 2003, so that may be their country of origin. I've never seen any other offerings of these stickers, so they're apparently pretty rare.

Some Willow stickers fit better into other categories. You can read about the Willow sticker book in the Merchandise/Children's Literature section, and the stickers that were given away with screening passes in Merchandise/Miscellaneous/Informational & Promotional.

Kraft Foods issed a set of 10 movie stickers. The stickers were printed on five 2x3 inch cards, with two peel-off stickers per card. There was a brief description of the pictured character on the back of the card. As an added bonus, the Willow logo on each card was also a peel-off sticker. One card was given away in each specially marked package of Velveeta loaf.

Ballantine published an 11½ x 12 inch 1989 Willow calendar. A 1991 Lucasfilm Twentieth Anniversary Calendar measured 14½ x 11 inches and contained color scenes and poster art from major Lucasfilm movies including Willow. You can see Nelwyns in the middle frame of the left side of the cover.

School Project Packet

The 'Promotional School Project' packet consisted of a folded poster and a short booklet full of educational exercises. The poster was exactly like the first teaser poster (the title set against swirly orange clouds) except for a banner across one of the corners -- the banner was not directly related to the movie. The booklet was full of photos from the movie and the educational exercises were designed to provoke conversation among students based on themes and scenarios in the movie. Thanks to Joe Frese for the pic, and thanks to Scott (who was lucky enough to actually get the school project packet from a teacher back in the olden days) for the information!
