MERCHANDISE - CHILDREN'S LITERATURE
|
|
Junior Novelization
|
| |
|
This 125-page novelization
of the movie, aimed at kids ages 10-14, was adapted by Joan D. Vinge and
released by Random House about the same time as the movie.
Also pictured here is a German hardcover book that I can't identify because
I can't see the name of any author other than George Lucas.
The artwork looks appropriate for a children's book, and the thickness makes me
guess that it might be some kind of junior novelization.

The Willow Storybook
|
| |
The children's storybook
of the movie, by Cathy East Dubowski, was published by Random House to
coincide with the opening of the film. The look and feel of the book is
much like Random House's other Lucasfilm storybooks (the Star Wars Trilogy
and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom), with a detailed summary
of the film, highlighted by gorgeous stills, following the description
and photos of major characters in the very front. Both paperback
and hardcover versions were published.

The Picture Storybook
|
| |
This adaptation, written
by Cathy West and illustrated by Diane DeGroat, had much the same look
and feel of the popular Little Golden Book series, although it was
released by Random House. The story is greatly simplified
(Sorsha is eliminated altogether), but the illustrations are charming.

Willow Finds a Baby
|
| |
|
Willow Finds A Baby
is a mini-storybook published by Random House in 1988. It is written by
Gail Herman and illustrated by Michael McDermott. It is 32 pages long (divided
more or less equally between text and pictures), and I would guess that
it's aimed at roughly the 4-to-8 age group. It tells the story of how Elora
escaped from Nockmaar and was found by Willow. The story has been simplified
- Willow has no qualms about taking her in and goes to the festival with
the intention of telling the High Aldwin about her. The violence has also
been toned down - the midwife is in no danger when she puts the baby in
the river, and after the death dog attacks the village it runs away instead
of being killed by the warriors. The story ends with Willow leaving for
the Daikini crossroads with no companions other than the baby.

Willow And The Brownies |
| |
This book is a companion to Willow Finds A Baby and is similar in size and
has the same target
audience. It was written by Emily James and illustrated by Vincent Segrelles. The copy
presented here is an Australian edition published by Budget Books in 1988.
This is the most interesting Willow
storybook I've ever seen, because it reinvents the movie instead of retelling
it. About 90% of the story is completely original, but they stayed true
to the personalities of the characters and the spirit of the movie, so
there's nothing jarring about it. It's written for young children so it's
not terribly sophisticated, but it's still a great deal of fun.

Coloring Books |
| |
|
Random House put out a series of six coloring books in 1988. The titles were
Dot-To-Dot Fun, Magical Creatures, Great Battles to Color, His
Friends and Foes, The Story to Color, and Coloring Fun.
A German coloring book that was nearly 100 pages long was also produced.
Matt Dauer sent in the front and back covers of a Willow Crayon By Number
set that apparently is very rare.
