Sorsha's Archery Skills
|
| |
|
This is not so much a cut scene as a small action clip. As the heroes pursue
Kael to Nockmaar, Sorsha uses two of those big arrows she's been lugging around
on her back for almost the whole movie to shoot down a couple of the Nockmaar minions.
This little piece of action is not as well reported in the literature as most of the
other cut scenes, but I think it would have been fun to watch. The graphic novel
displaces the action to the battle of Tir Asleen, and shows Sorsha dispatching the men
threatening Madmartigan this way. The novelization doesn't mention the incident at all.
However, the Sorsha mounted action figure is clearly based on this scene.

Madmartigan and Sorsha led the pursuing rebel troops, driven by their need to save
the baby and by a suble, unspoken rivalry. Madmartigan pulled ahead; Sorsha rode
forward to his side again. She aimed her bow and fired, then did it again. Two
Nockmaar soldiers fell, struck by her deadly arrows. Madmartigan glanced at her
admiringly. He had found a woman he could love at last - and one he could respect
as well.
But no matter how hard they drove their horses, they could not close the lead
that Kael had on them. Soon Nockmaar Castle loomed into view on the mountain above
them. Kael charged toward the castle drawbridge as it began to rise, leaping onto
the bridge at the last possible moment. His two remaining horsemen made the jump
after him; they missed the bridge's end and tumbled into the dry, rocky moat.

[From the Joanne Whalley interview in the Official Movie Magazine:]
"I did a little bit of archery, there's a scene we
shot (which has not been used in the film--Ron Howard told me why, but
I've forgotten) which I'm quite proud of. It's a bit where Sorsha,
on horseback, takes two enemies out with her bow and arrow. It involved
galloping along, without the reins, notching an arrow, and aiming the bow
and firing, twice. It's a shame it's gone, but there's so much action
in the film, you can't keep everything. That was just a tiny bit."
