CUT SCENES

Airk Threatens Sorsha

Considering how small this incident is, it's surprising how many sources report it. The details vary from one version to another, but all agree that the incident occurs near the end of the end of the battle of Tir Asleen, or shortly thereafter on the road to Nockmaar. Airk sees Sorsha and in most versions of the story hurries to confront her, thinking that she is still an enemy. Madmartigan stops him, explaining that Sorsha is now an ally. Then they all ride for Nockmaar together.

Although I don't think this small scene would have been terribly interesting to watch, leaving it in would have been an act of cinematic orderliness. This is probably why the incident is reported in so many different versions of the story. After all the battles Airk has fought against Nockmaar, it doesn't make sense for him to just accept Sorsha's presence without asking any questions.

WILLOW: I'm sorry. There were too many of them.

Madmartigan scoops him up. They ride out with Sorsha.

EXT. TIR ASLEEN

Kael and his men skirmish with Airk's army. Kael and four horsemen escape. Madmartigan rides out to Airk Thaughbaer.

MADMARTIGAN: Airk! Kael's got the baby!

Sorsha rides up. Airk draws his sword and goes to kill her. Madmartigan maneuvers his horse between them.

MADMARTIGAN: Sorsha rides with me.

Airk looks at Sorsha then sheathes his sword. Then, a command from the saddlebag:

FRANJEAN: Warriors!

ROOL: To the canyon!

The rebels chase Kael's army toward the canyon maze.

MADMARTIGAN: You out for a little ride in the country, Airk?

AIRK: Thought you might get lonely!

They spur their horses and gallop after the others. Then, Raziel trots out of the castle and clip-clops across the valley.

Novelization Excerpt

So, when Airk Thaughbaer's bay mare galloped into that scene of carnage, Willow Ufgood wiped the blood off his face and cried, "Airk! We must ride on Nockmaar!"

Madmartigan sat down and pulled off the golden helmet. He grinned wearily up at his old friend. "Out for a little ride in the country, Airk?"

"Thought you might be lonely, but I see you're not," Airk gestured at Sorsha with his sword. "What's this?"

"She saved my life, Airk. She rides with us, now."

Airk grunted.

"But we must hurry!" Willow said. "Now. To Nockmaar! There's no time to lose! Bavmorda will destroy the child!"

Junior Novelization Excerpt

Outside the castle walls Kael and his men were battling Airk's army. As Madmartigan reached Airk's side, he saw Kael and four other horsemen escape toward the hills. "Airk!" he shouted. "Kael's got the baby!" Seeing Sorsha, Airk raised his sword. Madmartigan maneuvered his horse between them. "Sorsha rides with me," he said.

Airk stared at him, then at Sorsha, and sheathed his sword. He opened his mouth, but before he could speak the orders came out of his saddlebag. "Warriors!" Franjean barked. "To the canyon!" Rool ordered. The soldiers around them rode away, pursuing Kael's army toward the canyon maze.

Willow Storybook Excerpt

General Kael saw Sorsha's change of heart - and cursed her. But he, at least, had gotten what he'd come for. Climbing onto his horse, he held Elora Danan high above his head and shouted against the wind: "Troops! To Nockmaar Castle!"

As their hoofbeats faded, others grew louder. On the horizon Airk Thaughbaer and hundreds of rebel horsemen charged toward Tir Asleen. And poking out of Airk's saddlebags were Rool and Franjean, waving their tiny spears with glee!

"Out for a ride in the country, Airk?" Madmartigan called.

"Thought you might get lonely way out here," shouted Airk, laughing. But when he spotted Bavmorda's daughter, he drew his sword.

Madmartigan stepped between them. "Sorsha rides with me."

Then Willow staggered from the castle, tears streaking his face. "They got Elora! I tried to protect her...I tried to fight, but there were too many of them..."

Willow Sticker Album Excerpt

Along the way, they meet up with Airk and his men, who have been chasing General Kael for many miles - but so far have failed to capture him. Upon seeing Sorsha, Airk draws his sword, unaware that she has turned against her mother and joined forces with Madmartigan and the others. Before Airk can do any harm to her, Madmartigan swings his horse between them and explains that Sorsha rides with him. Together they race onward - to Nockmaar Castle!
