CUT SCENES

Madmartigan the Sorcerer

After a hostage Sorsha escapes from the heroes, they continue through the canyon maze on their way to Tir Asleen. When they find their way blocked by a massive wall of thorns, Raziel instructs Madmartigan to help Willow with a magical chant to burn it down.

I'm very glad this scene was cut, because it feels all wrong. Until now the movie has emphasized that working magic requires inborn talent and extensive training. Madmartigan certainly doesn't have any training, and there's not the least indication that he has any talent. And now he's going to cast a spell? That's more than I can swallow.

For that matter, I don't want to see Willow casting this spell either. Sure, he's got the talent, and he's been working on the training. But we've been watching him struggle with magic ever since the Nelwyn festival, and until this point he's failed every time. After a buildup like that, his first successful spell needs to be a solemn, significant occasion. Hastily burning down a hedge? No. Transforming Raziel at the gates of Nockmaar? Yes.

Madmartigan mounts his horse. He and Sorsha look at each other. The hoofbeats get louder, closer. Madmartigan rides away, leaving Sorsha alone in the canyon.

EXT. WALL OF THORNS - DAY

Willow and Madmartigan ride to a passage in the canyon which is blocked by a wall of thorny vines.

WILLOW: Raziel! We'll have to turn back!

RAZIEL: Light three fires three paces apart and bring down Bavmorda's wall.

They leap down off their horses. Willow holds the baby and looks out for Kael's army, while Madmartigan urgently chips sparks into the thorns with a flint.

RAZIEL: Use the fourth chant of unity!

WILLOW: Tuatha luminockt tuatha!

RAZIEL: Both of you!

Madmartigan looks up, then looks at Willow.

MADMARTIGAN: Me??

WILLOW: Tuatha luminockt tuatha...

MADMARTIGAN: Tuatha... loom -- what is it?

A flame suddenly flares up in the wall.

MADMARTIGAN/Willow: (together) Tuatha luminockt tuatha! Tuatha luminockt tuatha!

EXT. WALL OF THORNS - A LITTLE LATER

Kael and his troops, including Sorsha, gallop up to the thorns, which have burned away leaving a smoldering opening. Willow and Madmartigan are gone.

EXT. VALLEY OF TIR ASLEEN - DAY

Willow and Madmartigan gallop out of the canyon maze into a lush valley of flowers. In the distance stands the beautiful CASTLE OF TIR ASLEEN.

Madmartigan hesitated, then ran for his horse. When he looked back, Sorsha was on her feet, looking after them in silence.

In minutes they reached the wall of thorns Raziel had seen from farther down the canyon. It seemed an impenetrable barrier. Massive, spikey vines rose thickly intertwined as far as they could see.

Madmartigan cursed. "Impossible!" No one can get through there! You've brought us all this way to..."

Raziel swooped down. "Quick! Light three fires three paces apart!"

Madmartigan did that, hurriedly using flint and steel from the saddlebag to chip sparks into a tinder of dried leaves and grass. Three frail flames wavered at the bottom of the wall.

"Now Willow! The Fourth Chant of Unity! Join the flames!"

"Tuatha lum..."

"Use the wand!"

"Oh yes!" He dug into his cloak and found it, holding it out with both hands. "Tuatha luminockt tuatha!" It burned and trembled in his palms, but the fires grew only a little.

"Too slow! Both of you!"

Madmartigan whirled around. He had drawn his sword, ready to fight the Nockmaars, who were almost upon them. "What, me? Charms?"

"Yes! Say it!"

"Tuatha luminockt tuatha," Willow chanted again, pointing the wand.

Madmartigan imitated him. "Tuatha...loom... What is it?"

Already the combined charm had begun to work. Flames stretched up from the fires like reaching arms.

"Together!"

"Tuatha luminockt tuatha!"

Now the flames leaped and the wall blazed, opening a smoking arch. They urged their frightened horses through. As soon as they were inside, the whole wall blazed, and moments later, when Sorsha, Kael and the Nockmaar troops arrived, they faced an inferno. Their horses reared away from it.

Junior Novelization Excerpt

Madmartigan turned back and swung up onto his horse, letting Sorsha go. But he sat a moment longer, looking back at her where she stood on the rocks, staring at him, while the hoofbeats echoed louder around them. At last he turned and galloped away, leaving her alone in the canyon.

He caught up with Willow just in time for them to pull their horses to a halt. Ahead of them the canyon was blocked by an impassable wall of thorns.

"Raziel!" Willow called. "We'll have to turn back!"

"Light three fires three paces apart and bring down Bavmorda's wall!" Raziel commanded. They leaped from their horses and ran to obey her. Willow held the baby tight, watching for Kael's troops, while Madmartigan urgently chipped sparks into the thorns with a flint.

"Use the fourth chant of unity!" Raziel called to Willow.

"Tuatha luminockt tuatha!" Willow shouted.

"Both of you!" Raziel ordered.

Madmartigan looked up, then looked at Willow. "Me?" he asked, incredulous.

"Tuatha luminockt tuatha..." Willow began again.

"Tuatha...loom - what is it?" Madmartigan demanded.

A flame blazed up suddenly in the wall. "Tuatha luminockt tuatha!" they cried together, perfectly this time. "Tuatha luminockt tuatha!" The wall of thorns burst into flames, withering away as they watched.

By the time Kael and his troops, including Sorsha, reached the wall, there was nothing left of it but smoldering twigs. Willow and Madmartigan were gone.
