CUT SCENES

Burglekutt vs. the Plow Pig

This scene occurs just after Burglekutt finishes threatening to take Willow's land. As Burglekutt is about to leave, he has a problem with Willow's plow pig. The sources disagree on the exact nature of the altercation, but they all sound like fun.

As much as I'd love to see this scene, I have to agree that it was wise to cut it from the movie. In order to maximize the sweetness of Willow's triumph over Burglekutt at the end of the movie, it first has to be established that Burglekutt has Willow thoroughly oppressed. It simply wouldn't be appropriate to have Willow scoring any kind of victory over Burglekutt this early in the movie.

BURGLEKUTT: I will have this land, Ufgood, and you will end up working in the mines.

He lets go of Willow and arrogantly turns away, walking right into the hog. It grunts and butts him into the mud.

Burglekutt gulped in outrage. He held his breath so long he began to turn purple. His eyes bulged. "Magic, eh? So that's what he has! Well, it'll take more than magic to keep this land if you miss another payment. One more! I'll have you off in no time! Off! Off!" Flinging his arm out again, Burglekutt whirled around with his nose in the air, tripped over Bets [the pig], and fell flat on his face in hog dung.

Squealing wickedly, Bets lunged to her feet and rooted him in the rear end as he struggled to get up.

Kiaya laughed. "Serves you right! You want our land so much, go ahead! Eat it up!"

Spluttering and gagging, Burglekutt heaved himself to his feet. "You'll pay!" he croaked. "Mark my words!" And he lumbered off to the road.

"You shouldn't be mean to him," Willow said when he had gone.

"Oh, I can't help it!" Kiaya stamped her foot again. "The man is such a toad! She leaned over and patted Bets, who was grunting happily. "Good Bets! Good pig!"

Mims and Ranon appeared then at the top of the riverbank. They had managed to drag the little boat all the way up to the edge of the field. "Mama! Come see!"

Kiaya stiffened. "Where are the children? Willow, you didn't leave them alone by the river?" She pulled away and ran toward the riverbank.

Willow nervously watched her go. He looked back when Burglekutt sneered, "Magic! You'll need magic if you expect to get your planting done before the rains start." He flung the seed at Willow's feet and grabbed him by the collar. "I will have this land, Ufgood," he threatened, "and you will end up working in the mines." He let Willow go, turned away - and walked directly into the side of Willow's hog. The hog grunted indignantly and butted him backward into the mud.

Willow retreated with great haste.

Down by the river he found Kiaya - just as he had feared, with the Daikini baby in her arms.

Willow Storybook Excerpt

In the distance the children laughed.

"Willow!" cried Kiaya. Did you leave the children alone by the river?" Alarmed, she ran toward the sound.

But Burglekutt wasn't through with Willow. "You'll need magic if you expect to get your planting done before the rains start!" he said. Then he grabbed Willow by the collar. "You'll lose your land to me, Ufgood, and you'll end up working in the mines!" Arrogantly, he turned with his nose in the air - and tripped right over the pig.
