Big news in the Skinned Deep department! According to this November 26 Fangoria article, the Fangoria Presents GoreZone video/DVD label has acquired the North American distribution rights for the movie. It will be released early next year, although the exact date has not been specified.
The Skinned Deep official website on artexposure.com has disappeared; apparently the domain expired in October 2004. But you can still view it, along with most of the pictures, here on Archive.org. It looks as though a new official site is on the way; if you go to Skinneddeep.com, you get a 'coming soon' sign.
The Official Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy website has undergone some major revisions. (Remember, to get into the site you have to push the red button twice, even though they tell you not to.) Yesterday the site had some lovely concept art including two pictures of Marvin. Today the site is being hacked by Vogons (a recurring event - they do love to play around over there) and the concept art is gone. It'll probably be back soon, but just in case I've posted it here so it'll always be available to Marvin's fans.
Bad news on the Leprechaun front. The Lions Gate Films website has undergone some substantial changes, and the information on the older movies in their catalog seems to have disappeared. This includes all the Leprechaun trailers that used to be available on the site. In addition, they've removed the link to a public-access email address, so it's no longer clear if the Lep 7 campaign is getting through at all. I'm going to keep it going anyway, because they might be receiving the emails. I'll keep an eye on the Lions Gate website in case any of this stuff comes back. The revision is fairly recent, so they may not be through with it yet.
Good news on the Leprechaun front for those of you who crave Lep shirts. I've discovered an Ebay store selling Lep 5 hooded t-shirts on an ongoing basis. Lep t-shirts with the same design are being sold through auctions; if the seller doesn't have an auction going on when you want a shirt, try emailing them. Warning, these do NOT look like licensed products.
The DVD for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was released a few days ago, so that means it's time for some screen captures and a better look at Warwick's choirmaster character! The screen caps are posted here but our best view of the character doesn't come from the movie - it's on the Artbox Autograph Card that's included in the picture gallery.
The special features on the DVD include a 'choir practice' singalong with an extended version of the song. But this doesn't mean that we get an extended view of the choir and its conductor. Instead they fill in most of the additional time with scenes from other parts of the movie.
Thanks to some great tips from drkenchts, I have fresh new information on the Gremlins adult literacy campaign and the Chronicles of Narnia DVD. Follow those links to learn more!
Fans of The Tenth Kingdom should check out these links. Ever After is a nice site with a most noteworthy guestbook entry on November 5th 2004. It was signed by Warwick Davis himself! The 11th Kingdom is another nice site that has more on Acorn than you find on most 10K sites.
Warwick made did a charity signing at the Infinitely Better Store last weekend. If you weren't there, it's already too late!
This has been a busy update! Today's final item is a link to some Warwick Davis movie quotes on the Celebrity Quotes page. They're fairly accurate, too, which isn't always the case on many websites.
Want to see Warwick on the big screen? Go see Ray, which opened a few days ago. You'll be glad you did! In the meantime, click here to learn more about Warwick's role and my general reaction to the film.
Now that Skinned Deep is making a number of film festival appearances and getting some international distribution, several more reviews have appeared on the web. This seems to be one of those movies that people either love or hate, with the majority enjoying the movie. Therefore, I've updated the Skinned Deep section to include some enthusiastic reviews.
In September and October, the VH1 cable channel was airing a program called When Star Wars Ruled The World. The show included interviews with fans and stars, including Warwick. And for once, most of his screen time was spent discussing Star Wars in general and his reaction to the series as a fan, instead of focusing in on the Ewoks. You can check here on the VH1 website for any future airdates; as of this writing, there are none scheduled. Thanks to Paul Smith for the tip.
Warwick was at the Scandinavian Sci Fi, Game & Film Convention last weekend, and I've updated the Conventions section accordingly.
In the mood for a little quirky entertainment? Go to CelebMatch.com and enter your birthdate, and they'll tell you how compatible you are with Warwick according to three different parameters, along with an overall rating. I tried it out, and it appears that he likes older women! Don't take it too seriously, though, because it's all based on biorhythms. Does ANYBODY still believe in that?
Warwick's guest appearance on BBC1's Carrie & Barry aired on October 1. This means that I no longer have any qualms about spoilers, so I've updated the section to include a synopsis of the episode. Follow that link to read it.
Two new items have been added to the Conventions and Personal Appearances section. One is an upcoming appearance on October 16-17 in the Netherlands at New Star Con 2, and the other is a September appearance at a children's party held by Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, England.
Finally, I've updated the Skinned Deep section to include an April 2004 Variety review that says:
"Skinned Deep" is a berserk horror comedy debut for writer-helmer Gabriel Bartalos, who's previously done f/x work on various mainstream slashers. Tale of a girl trapped by maniacal rural clan is more a series of whacked-out set pieces than anything else, and it may wear out many viewers by going so incessantly over-the-top. Nonetheless, this is the stuff that cult followings are made of....This is just part of the review; you have to sign up for a subscription to read the whole thing, and I haven't done that.
Good news on the Star Wars front! The Ewok TV movies will be released on DVD on November 23, 2004 according to a news story on the official Star Wars website. Both movies will be sold together in the same package. Alas, it doesn't appear that there will be any special features, but at least we can't complain about the price - Amazon.com is offering the movies for $10.49.
That's not the only Star Wars news. The A&E Channel has been airing a two-hour documentary called Star Wars: Empire of Dreams describing the making of the classic trilogy. The last half hour includes a brief commentary by adult Warwick looking back at his experience on Return of the Jedi and some behind the scenes footage of young Warwick on the movie's set. Check here [Obsolete link removed] on the A&E website for upcoming showings, and if there aren't any, fear not; I'm told that the DVD set for the trilogy (released on September 21st) includes a longer version of the documentary. Thanks to Paul Smith for the tip.
There's also a bit of news about the UK Gremlins Adult Literacy Ads. I already knew about the TV ads, but there were other ads that I didn't know about until Jonathan Winter tipped me off about them (thanks!). According to this page on the Department for Education and Skills website, a set of 30 second radio ads featuring the Gremlins were created in 2003 for national broadcast across England. Until recently, that page also stated that the ads were set to run from September 15 to November 18 and again from January to March. Those dates might actually refer to 2004 and 2005, because Jonathan recently heard one of them. He reports, "It has to be Warwick! Take the irish lilt off the accent and it's Lep coming out of your radio (the Lep evil cackle is also present!). Very frightening in the middle of the day to say the least!" Some great poster art was created to accompany the campaign; you can view it by following either of the links above.
It's been a little over eight months now since the release of Leprechaun 6. That's almost enough time to make an entire human being from scratch, and certainly enough time for Lions Gate Entertainment to have a solid idea of how good a revenue-producer the movie is. I can't find any online info about Lep 6 sales figures, but the fan base is large and loyal so I'm sure the movie did well. I think it's time to tell Lions Gate that we want more, so I'm kicking off a Leprechaun 7 email campaign. To do your part, just write to Lions Gate at general-inquiries@lgecorp.com and tell them (politely!) that you want them to make another Lep movie.
Back in March 2003, a Celluloid Shockers interview with Warwick Davis revealed that there were plans for a DVD boxed set of the first six movies featuring audio commentaries on the films by Warwick and Lep makeup artist Gabe Bartalos. There's been no news about the boxed set since then, so feel free to request it while you're begging Lions Gate for Lep 7.
For months now I've been holding on to one last Lep 6 treat, and I've decided to post it now to celebrate the kickoff of the Lep 7 campaign. The item in question is the Lep 6 script, and it's not just any old copy of the script either - it was a gift from someone special. Hurry over to the Lep 6 Script section to find out more!
As one final Leprechaun treat, I've posted a picture of some interesting Leprechaun costume hands in the Leprechaun Props section. I'm not 100% sure they're genuine, but they were convincing enough to make it onto the page.
There's news on several other projects. The reliable sources have been busy this week! The first item is about the voice of Marvin in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. A July 23rd story on the Magrathea website revealed that the voice of Marvin had not been cast yet, and that Warwick had recorded all the dialogue for the character. I've been informed that as of today Marvin's voice has still not been cast. The decision will probably be made late in the post-production process, and they may very well end up tapping Warwick for the job.
In other Marvin news, the UK's Sky One channel has an upcoming Ultimate Sci Fi series that will include an episode on the ultimate top 10 robots on Monday September 27th at 8pm. The series website is here and includes the opportunity for fans to vote on their favorites. According to a September 1st story on Magrathea, Marvin will be featured on the show no matter what. I'd guess that this will be one of the older incarnations of the character but the only way to find out is to watch the show!
At present, none of the major Harry Potter webpages or movie database webpages are reporting that Warwick will be in the fourth Harry Potter movie. But a knowledgeable private source has informed me that he will indeed be in the movie, and will be playing Flitwick again rather than the choirmaster character that he played in the third movie. The movie started filming in March and is still going at it - Warwick will be doing his part next week! Due to this news, I've started a new Filmography section on Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Today's final news item is about Carrie & Barry. This UK series premieres on September 3rd on BBC One at 9 PM. Warwick will make a guest appearance in Episode 5, which airs on October 1st. Since this is a one-time-only appearance, this is a don't-miss episode for UK fans. American fans can only hope that the BBC America cable channel will eventually pick up the series!
Today's first item is some new additions to the
Leprechaun Links section. The most entertaining new link
is the great Lep cartoon posted
here on the Off the
Mark website. They have strict no-borrowing rules so I can't isolate the cartoon
by posting it on my page. Instead, the link leads to a page with four cartoons on it, and
the one on the top right is the one to look for. It's not
directly related to the horror series, but it would make a GREAT Lep movie! Maybe
even better than Lep vs. Chucky. Thanks to Paul Smith for the tip.
I've also added a number of Lep-related message boards to the Lep Links,
and some boards related to Warwick's other movies (and to Warwick himself) in
the Warwick Davis Links section.
The Leprechaun Pictures section has some interesting
new international VHS and DVD covers that I've spotted over the last few months
for the first four movies. Of particular interest are the
German Lep 3 cover
and the German Lep 4 cover,
which have artwork unlike any I've previously seen on these movies. It's nice that
the Germans have started calling Lep 4 by its proper name instead of calling it
Space Platoon like they used to.
Good news on the Carrie and Barry front.
The series will debut on September 3 on BBC One at 9 PM. Thanks to Jan for
the tip, and also for the link to this
press release. You won't see Warwick on September 3rd, however, because his
character doesn't show up until Episode 5. Is he a regular on the series after
that? I don't know! Follow the first link in this paragraph for more details.
If you didn't see my article about Hullywood
a few weeks ago, now is a good time to check it out. Thanks to Nick, the event
organizer, I've added a couple of new pictures as well as a link to Hullywood's
new website. [Obsolete link removed] The next event
will be in December and it sounds like a good time, so if you'll be near Hull (UK)
at that time, be sure to check it out!
I recently discovered that Lions Gate has changed their public email address
to general-inquiries@lgecorp.com.
So that's the place to write if you want to request Leprechaun 7.
Finally, Warwick will be appearing at
Collectormania 6 to be held on
October 1-3, 2004 in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, England.
Today's main story is about Skinned Deep,
the independent horror film by Lep makeup artist Gabe Bartalos. Although the
they have not yet come to an agreement with an American distributor, the film
is starting to become available in Europe. The Russian release occurred a couple
of weeks ago, and there'll be a big release in France in October. The French
DVD has several bonus features including storyboards, their own making-of documentary,
and a lot of behind the scenes pictures that haven't been seen before.
The movie will also be shown at the
Edinburgh International Film Festival on
August 21 and 22. Those of you who'll be in or near Scotland then can go
here [Obsolete link removed]
for details.
In other news, the Official Warwick
Davis Web Site added some great new pictures in a recent
update. The email address for fan mail was also changed to
fanmail@warwickdavis.co.uk.
There's also some news on The Hitchhiker's Guide
to the Galaxy. The first fansite
devoted exclusively to the movie is now online. It includes several versions
of the teaser
trailer, which was released on July 24th. It doesn't show any of the characters
in the film, but is entertaining in the spirit of the books.
The Warwick Davis Articles section has
a brand new report on Hullywood, an
event that Warwick appeared at in March 2004 in Hull, England. This is not
your typical reprinted article - it's an exclusive story. A
report on the event is presented, but the main attraction is the great one-of-a-kind
pictures that Nick, the event organizer, sent me. You've gotta see them! The
next Hullywood will take place in December and it looks like fun, so if you expect
to be near Hull then you should follow that link for further details.
In more appearance news, Warwick will be appearing at the Peterborough Central
Library on July 22nd - that's this Thursday - along with M.J. Simpson, who
is a Douglas Adams biographer and the webmaster of
Magrathea,, an outstanding
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy website. As
you might expect, the topic of the day will be Hitchhiker.
If you'd like information on time and location, go
here.
In other article news, check out this
March 2004 article on the Peterborough Today website. It's sort of a
two-parter; the first page is an interview with a young Englishman who suffered employment
discrimination because of his height, and the second page is an interview with
Warwick getting his reaction to the situation.
Today's final item is a note on the upcoming British sitcom
Carrie & Barry. Although an exact screening
date is unavailable at present, the first broadcast will probably be in
September on BBC1. Thanks to Jan, who phoned the show's publicist and got this
information.
Today's update begins with a number of additions to the outside links in the
Warwick Davis Articles section. There's a
June 2003 interview on
J.W.'s LOTR
Fansite - some of the questions are a bit awkward, and the answers are
correspondingly restrained! Also from June 2003 is a
BBC
Cambridgeshire article about a Harry Potter contest that was
judged by Warwick, complete with some interesting pictures. And the most bizarre
entry in the entire Articles section:
Peterborough ESP3 [Obsolete link removed] has a
strange little announcement from May 2004 about Warwick's participation in a
cheese rolling festival.
A few new pictures have been added to Warwick
Davis Other Pictures Part 4.
Work continues on The Hitchhiker's Guide to the
Galaxy. According to the
Magrathea website, some
location work in Wales was recently completed. Filming at Elstree Studios is expected
to continue into August.
Leprechaun Back 2 tha Hood was released on December 30, 2003, which means
that we're just a few days away from the 6-month anniversary and the end of any claim
that the movie is a new release. I think it's time to put the
Lep 6 body count on the page. Enjoy!
Also new in this update: a couple of new pictures in
Phantom Menace Pictures Part 2 including one of
Weazel doing something that you won't see in the movie!
In my last update, I mentioned my intention to get some more pictures of Warwick's
character in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
However, my VHS screen capture program has decided that it doesn't want to work any more,
and I haven't been able to locate the poster book with a reasonably clear picture of the
character. Until I can correct this situation, we'll just have to make do with the stuff
that's already on the page.
Today I discovered that the A&E cable TV network has been airing a one-hour
program called The Magic Touch of Harry Potter that offers a behind the
scenes look at all three Harry Potter movies. The last 10 minutes of the show has a
film clip of the Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban scene where the
students are sleeping in the Great Hall, and Warwick's character is clearly
visible. The show is airing again tonight, so I'll record it
and see if I can make a screen capture that's worth posting on the webpage. My computer
doesn't do very well with VHS screen caps, so it won't come close to the quality of a
DVD screen cap. I'll get some of those later on... If you'd like to watch the
Harry Potter special, check the A&E website for times.
In the meantime, I've located some pictures on
The Leaky Cauldron and TheSnitch.co.uk that show Warwick's character,
and posted them in my Harry Potter 3 section. I've
revised the text of that section as well. None of these pictures give a clear enough
view of the character to satisfy me. However, one of the pics is from a poster book, so
I'll try to get my hands on the book and make a bigger scan.
So what's going on with this character anyway? Some message boards are calling
this Flitwick's newer, younger look, but I don't think so; if that was the case
the credits would call him Flitwick instead of Wizard. This
Peterborough Today interview calls him "the music professor in the latest Harry Potter
film." My personal theory is that for some reason they couldn't do the full
Flitwick makeup at the last moment, so they improvised another character.
Although the pictures available at present don't show it well, it looks to
me as though Wizard may have Flitwick's nose or something similar to it.
Flitwick's robes are recognizable and it wouldn't be easy to come up with another
costume that would fit Warwick on short notice, so that would explain the character's
lack of proper wizard wear. He's
not wearing robes in the choir scene, and it's hard to tell if he's got them
in the sleeping scene. Time will tell if my theory is right!
That Peterborough Today interview linked in the previous paragraph
mainly discusses The Hitchhiker's Guide
to the Galaxy. It also includes links to three older Warwick interviews.
That's not the only Hitchhiker's news. Although the movie's release isn't
expected until June 3, 2005, the
Official Site is already
up and running. A word on entering the main page: press the red button that appears,
and when you see a sign saying "Please do not press this button again", go
ahead and press it again. This is The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy!
You can't expect them to play straight with you.
They don't have a huge amount of content at the moment, but clicking on the picture
for the May 13th blog entry will get you a video of Warwick testing the prototype
Marvin costume. Warning, it loads SLOWLY. Clicking on the picture for the May 11th
blog entry brings up a cast and crew picture with Warwick standing in the front row.
A number of nice pictures have popped up on the web from the London premiere of
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. I've posted my favorite picture of
Warwick with his wife and daughter in Warwick Davis Other
Pictures Part 4. Similar pictures can be seen in several places on the web,
for instance on the
Wire Image website.
But don't believe it when they tell you the daughter's name is Jenny - it's really
Annabelle!
Final news item: I have learned that Warwick is most definitely in the upcoming
Carrie and Barry britcom. The show is currently
in production, so if you live in the UK and would like to see Warwick at work,
hurry over to the Standing Room Only website [Obsolete link removed]
for information on booking tickets to be in the studio audience.
There's been quite a lot of news lately, so don't stop reading if you haven't seen
the most recent updates.
According to IMDb, the
final title for the upcoming Ray Charles biopic will be Ray instead
of the original working title of Unchain My Heart. I wish they hadn't
done that; every time I saw the original title, the immortal music of Ray Charles
would start running through my head. Ray just makes me think of a guy I know
with that name. Warwick has a part in this movie, and you can read what I know about
it here. The movie will be released on October 29, 2004.
Thanks to Paul Smith for the tip on the title change. It appears that the change
was made recently, but there's a special (and very unfortunate) reason that
it was was noticed at this particular time. Ray Charles passed away today at the
age of 73. Damn. He wrote some really fine music. You can read a detailed obituary
on MSNBC.
I posted another update yesterday. If you haven't seen it yet, keep on
reading:
Today I discovered that Warwick made an unannounced update to his
Official Biography back in April. This update included the information that he'd
been cast in an upcoming BBC sitcom called Carrie & Barry. It's
not clear whether this deal is still on; the production company issued a
press release two days ago that doesn't mention Warwick so it's possible that
there's been a change of plans. In any event, I've started a Filmography section
for the series here. The series is
being taped right now, and that link includes information on getting tickets to
be in the studio audience. This will probably be useful only for residents
of England.
If you haven't seen my June 7th update yet, keep on reading:
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is out at last, and guess
what? Contrary to all expectations, Warwick does NOT play Professor Flitwick
in this movie. What's going on?? Click here
to find out.
BBC
Cambridgeshire has posted a reprint of an interview that originally appeared
around January 2002. The text was modified a little in the reprint, and they've added
some interesting new pictures and eliminated some old ones. The original version
of the article
can be seen here on my page.
There was one bit of brand-new information in the BBC Cambridgeshire reprint:
Warwick recently started appearing in advertisements for Top Up Tv. You can read more
about it here. It's complete with some great pictures of
Warwick as a garden gnome!
The Warwick Davis Articles section
has also been updated with a 1997 Film
Review interview that was part of a 20th Anniversary of Star Wars
issue. The article doesn't break any new ground, but it does include a nice picture.
In a bit of Leprechaun news, Paul Smith recently informed me that the old movie
CDs of Lep 1 and Lep 2 are available on the
Movie CD website. [Obsolete link removed] The emergence
of DVD technology has rendered these CDs obsolete, but they're still a nice collectors'
item.
Today's update is all about an assortment of Lep goodies that have
been spotted on eBay in recent months. The only item that appears to be
authorized is a Lep 4 crew jacket that can be viewed in the
Leprechaun Merchandise section.
The other items are in the Leprechaun Art section.
They include custom figures, a mini-bust and, believe it or not, a lightswitch
plate.
All right, Leprechaun fans - my Lep
6 Sound Clips are now online. Enjoy!
You can also check out IMDb's
Page Kennedy photo gallery for a couple of unique Lep 6 behind the scenes pictures.
I also have a nice little treat for the Willow fans. The
Warwick Davis Articles section is now home
to the Willow Starburst Interview from
the magazine's 1989 Winter Special issue. Although the article is 15 years old,
it's still good, and contains quite a bit of information that I hadn't seen before.
In my last update I promised that I would loosen up on my Lep 6 no-spoiler
policy. I'm sure the serious fans have all seen the movie by this time, so I'm
going to start delivering on that promise.
I've spent enough time checking the page's visitor statistics to know that
pictures are by far the most popular feature on the site. So that's the kind of
Lep 6 treat I'm presenting today. If you go to the
Lep 6 Picture Gallery you'll
have access to an extensive library of screen captures. These pictures clearly
demonstrate how wonderfully expressive the Leprechaun
is. Obviously, a huge amount of the credit for that goes to the acting talents of
Warwick Davis. But he couldn't do it without the fabulous makeup created
by Gabe Bartalos, which lets Warwick perform all those expressions in spite of
the large quantity of artificial material that he's wearing on his face.
The makeup process is fascinating, but it hasn't been particularly easy for
the public to learn much about it. Although there are a handful of pictures from magazine
articles on my website that provide a glimpse of how it's done, a good look at the
complete process hasn't been available on the web until now. If you follow that link in
the previous paragraph, you'll find a new gallery of Lep 6 behind
the scenes pictures that I took during my visit to
the Lep 6 set. I was highly motivated to not make a nuisance of myself while
I was there so I didn't take very many pictures, but I did get a nice step by
step demonstration of the makeup process. For a long time I didn't think I'd
be able to put these pictures on the web, but now the obstacles have been cleared.
My deep thanks to everyone who made that possible!
There's good news on the Skinned Deep front. I still
don't know when the DVD will come out, but the film is continuing to gather
the kind of momentum it needs for a successful release. In late March the movie
was shown at the Another Hole in the Head Film Festival in San Francisco. The cheering
audiences who greeted the film continued a tradition that I didn't previously
know about but wholeheartedly approve of - throwing plastic plates whenever Warwick's PLATES
character was onscreen! The movie also received an enthusiastic
professional review.
For still more Skinned Deep fun (with lots of pictures) check out this
interview with director Gabe
Bartalos on the Unitshifter website.
There's news on several other movies as well. If
Yahoo
Movies is correct, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the
Galaxy starts shooting on April 19 - the day after tomorrow! I haven't been
able to get any reliable information on the movie's budget, but the most
knowledgeable-sounding rumors put it around $80 million. That makes it a Major Motion
Picture, so we can expect the project to be well supported by the studio.
For a long time I thought that the 2001 movie Al's Lads
was simply unavailable in the U.S., but that wasn't true - it IS available, but has been
retitled Capone's Boys. It's still a rare item and you're not likely to
find a copy at your local video store, but it is available on Amazon.com and probably
other sources too.
Several of my past updates have provided information on Warwick's appearances
as a gremlin in a series of UK commercials. However, it only occurred to me recently
that I didn't have a filmography section for people seeking information on the ad
campaign. That problem has been solved - just click
here or go through the Filmography's TV Guest
Appearances & Commercials subsection.
Today's update concludes with a couple of announcements about personal appearances.
On April 24-25 Warwick will be at the Scandinavian Sci Fi, Game & Film Convention
in Malmö, Sweden. And on June 4-6 he'll be the guest of honor at the
Disney World Star Wars Weekend
in Orlando, Florida.
A happy St. Patrick's Day to you all!
Now that Leprechaun Back 2 tha Hood has been out for nearly three months,
I'm going to relax my no-spoiler rule just a little bit. Therefore, I've put up
a new version of my Lep 6 Set Report, replacing
the old non-specific one with a more detailed version that describes the scenes
that I saw being filmed. As time goes by I'll loosen up a lot more on the no-spoiler
rule, but that's enough for now.
National Public Radio did not do a story on
the Leprechaun today, and as far as I know they've failed to report on our
hero on every St. Patrick's Day for the last ten years. But what makes it extra-special
this year is that they actually thought about doing a story on the movies! At first
they were considering putting
ME on the air. I would have done it too if they insisted, but it was kind of scary so
I tried to divert them with the names of several Lep-related people who would make
excellent guests. Alas, in the end they decided to go with an unrelated story about
someone's memories of a St. Paddy's parade in Dublin, but I
hope they come back to the Lep series in some future year. I would love to hear
Warwick doing an interview in character as the Leprechaun on normally-serious NPR - that
would be surreal!
I just discovered a great picture of Warwick with Verne Troyer (aka Mini-Me)
here
on The Official Warwick Davis Web Site.
Occasionally an update will go online there without a lot of fanfare, so every
now and then I cruise around the page looking for anything that I might have missed.
That's how I found this picture. It has apparently been online since November, so
there's a definite risk that I'm the very last person to know about it!
There's no indication of when or where the picture was taken. It could have been
at a convention, and the set of the first Harry Potter movie is another possibility.
Warwick and Verne both played Gringotts goblins in that film, with Warwick as the
goblin bank teller and Verne as Griphook, the goblin who takes Harry and Hagrid
down to the vault.
Did you know that Warwick provided the voices for both of those characters? That's
one of the revelations in this wonderful new
Exclusive Magazine
interview. The interview took place on January 18, 2004 so it's quite recent.
This article is nice and long, and though it covers some familiar territory, it also
includes a lot of interesting detail that I've never seen before. It's fun stuff,
so check it out!
I've got some new Leprechaun publicity photos! You'll find one each in the picture
galleries for Lep 2, Lep 5
and Lep 6. The
Lep 5 photo is especially gorgeous.
The Warwick Davis Articles section has a couple
of new links related to his role as a gremlin in commercials for the UK adult literacy
campaign. The one that's the most fun is the December 2003 article on the Guardian
Unlimited website talking about restrictions placed on the airing of the commercials.
It seems they've been frightening small children! The second article, a
BBC News article from
August 2003, will interest sports fans. It talks about Warwick's appearance with cricket star
Phil Tufnell as part of the campaign.
To spice things up a little more, I've posted a couple of gremlins publicity
photos in Warwick Davis Other Pictures Part 4.
These commercials look like so much fun - I really wish I could see them!
Finally, in Warwick Davis Links I've added the
hilarious WWWF Grudge
Match Gremlins vs. Ewoks fantasy fight. Those are the gremlins from the Spielberg
movies, not the ones in the literacy commercials! Here's an interesting
quote for those of you who don't have time to read the whole enormous thing:
"the Ewoks have a true champion: Warwick Davis. This guy went on to play the Leprechaun,
an incredibly evil character. Did you see any of those movies (go on, admit that you did;
the popular excuse is that Jennifer Aniston was in the first one)? The guy is one magical
Can of Whoopass (TM)! And, if rumor is to be believed, he recently lost the part of Frodo
in the Lord of the Rings movies. Any guy who's Too Evil for Tolkien (TM by me, in case
that becomes a wrestling catchphrase) HAS to represent the worst of the worst.
Therefore, the Ewoks trimuph."
Today is the fourth anniversary of this webpage, which first hit cyberspace
on this day in the year 2000. The size of the page has grown enormously in
those four years, and visitorship also continues to grow. The cumulative total: 7,000 hits
at the end of the first year; 22,000 at the end of the second; 43,000 at the end of
the third; and 67,000 now.
Here's a postscript on the Lep 7 hoax that was the subject
of my last update. Creature Corner was able to identify the perpetrator; you can
read the story here. [Obsolete link removed]
The perp even confessed on this
CHUD message board - it's the sixth message in the thread.
In addition, Bloody-Disgusting declared the rumor a fake in this
story.
Here's a little something for everyone to enjoy as St. Patrick's Day draws nearer. Check
out the Leprechaun
Launch at Zooass.com. It has nothing whatsoever to do with the movies, but it's
fun to click on the 'Swing' button and see what happens. There are some interesting
prizes when you win, too. Thanks to Dave Tripet for telling me about the site!
UK fans have a couple of events coming up where you'll have the opportunity
to meet Warwick. The first is the London
Film & Comic Con, to be held on March 6th (in London, of course). Val Kilmer
will be there too, so it's an extra-special treat for Willow fans. The
second event is the very next day, March 7th, at
The Exe-Wing Fundraisers Star Wars
Day VIII in Honiton, Devon. These events have been added to the
Conventions section, and you can read additional
details on the Official
Warwick Davis Web Site where I first learned about them.
Happy birthday to Warwick Davis, who turns 34 today!
In honor of the occasion, I've started a new Leprechaun 7
section. But don't get too excited; I didn't do it to announce any good news.
In the last week some false rumors about the movie started circulating on the
web, and today Lions Gate confirmed that these stories were untrue. Follow that
link for more information.
Another Warwick Davis interview has hit the web! You can check it out at
Horror.com, and I've also
put a link to it in the Warwick Davis Articles section.
The interview covers several topics but focuses mainly on the Leprechaun
series and Lep 6 in particular. Thanks to the author, Staci Layne Wilson, for
telling me it was there!
The Filmography has an important new link!
This new project was actually mentioned in the Fangoria interview that I linked to
in my last update, but I was so swept up in the Lep 6 release that I didn't notice it
at first. But I've certainly noticed it now, and I'm very excited about it. Warwick
has landed a choice role in The Hitchhiker's Guide to
the Galaxy, set for release in 2005. Due to the widespread popularity of the book
series that the film is based on, the web has some excellent sources of movie news as
well as a number of fanpages dedicated to Warwick's character. For more details,
follow that link.
The Warwick Davis Articles section has a new
link to a January 2004
interview on Bloody-Disgusting
which covers a wide variety of topics including Lep 6 and Skinned Deep. This
is the first interview I've seen where Warwick reveals his favorite Leprechaun movie.
It's the same as mine - he has good taste! It also seems to be the first interview
where he mentions his new son, who was born sometime around March 2003.
I asked the interview's author, MediaevalSuperHeidi, if she had any information on a release
date for Skinned Deep. She said that they're currently
aiming at Summer 2004. Thanks for the info, Heidi!
The Lep 6 Credits are now online. Be sure to
check out the part near the end that describes the treatment of Leprechauns; somebody
obviously decided to have a little fun.
Those of us who don't live in England don't have any opportunities to view
Warwick's work in commercials. But now we can look at a website about the
character he played in an adult literacy campaign. The
Warwick Davis Links section now connects to
this C.M. Vision SFX site about the
Gremlin costumes. [Obsolete link removed]
Happy New Year to all! And it really is a happy new year, because
the latest installment in the Leprechaun series is finally available and it's great.
The Lep Back 2 tha Hood section has been completely
revamped, to talk about the movie and make the presentation consistent with the
pages for the first five movies. The old version of the page is still available
through the "Pre-Release Info" link at the bottom of the Lep 6 section.
Following the example of the pages for Lep 1 through 5, the Lep 6 section now
has links to numerous related sections. But in some cases, following the link
will take you to a "Not Yet" notice. Later on, I'll give this movie the
same full coverage as the first five. But right now it's a brand new release, and
people need to find out about the movie's unique features
by watching it repeatedly, not by reading the information on a webpage.
For the same reason, I've avoided spoilers when I talk about the movie in the main
Lep 6 section. It'll be a few months before I start posting the revealing
material!
Other additions will come sooner. For example, I simply haven't had time to
make the Lep 6 Credits section yet. In fact, at the moment I've only had time
to listen to one of the two audio commentaries on the DVD. Naturally, I chose
the one by Warwick Davis and Steve Ayromlooi. There's a lot of fascinating
Lep trivia in the commentary, but my favorite moment comes when Warwick mentions
my webpage as the credits are rolling. THANK YOU, Warwick - that was a huge thrill!
It doesn't look like Fangoria magazine has any plans to print an article about
Back 2 tha Hood; they stopped doing on-the-set reports after Lep 3. But
Fangoria.com has come through for us, in the form of an
interview with
Warwick Davis discussing the entire series, with particular focus on #6.
I've added this link to the Leprechaun Articles
section.
The article includes the horrifying revelation that at some point, the
producers considered replacing Warwick with another actor. It doesn't say
when or on which movie this occurred; it could have been a long time ago. But
listen up, Lions Gate! The success of the Leprechaun series is due to Warwick's
flair and personality as the title character. Don't EVER think of hiring someone
else to do the job, because the movies would be unwatchable without him!
The Lep 6 Official Site still
hasn't added the primary content, but I'm keeping an eye on it. Now that the
movie is out, they'll probably put the good stuff up soon.
Now that we finally have Lep 6 to enjoy, the next big question is: what about
Lep 7? The DVD audio commentary says that time will tell. Well, if we want time
to give us the answer we want, we need to do more than just wait and see.
It's way too early to start a Lep 7 email campaign, but there's no harm in writing
to Lions Gate to express your appreciation for the series and ask for more. It's
especially helpful to voice a lot of enthusiasm for Back 2 tha Hood,
since it was the first Lep film produced by Lions Gate; the first five came
from Trimark before Lions Gate bought them out. But it's the box office that really
speaks the loudest, and the quickest route to Lep 7
is a significant financial success for Lep 6. So encourage your friends to watch
the movie; telling them to buy or rent it is better than inviting them
over to see your copy!
